McLaughlin’s perfect weekend

Monday 27 May, 2019
Scott McLaughlin has claimed a perfect two out of two in WInton.
Scott McLaughlin has continued his incredible run in 2019 to pick up two wins from two races during the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship’s visit to Winton.

The Truck Assist Winton SuperSprint’s first race had plenty of drama, with a collision between McLaughlin and teammate Fabian Coulthard early in the race, forcing the reigning champion off the road.

Re-joining the race in third, McLaughlin found his way back into top spot after the pit stops.

For the remainder of the race, the New Zealander didn’t give up his lead, taking his ninth win of the year, while Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds rounded out the podium.

"It’s an awkward one. I didn’t know if Fabian was 100 per cent there, I thought it was my corner, I was in front far enough," McLaughlin said of the clash.

"I went off the road and tried to get back and re-join in the right position, but I was going to go the wrong way, so I was dammed if I did and dammed if I didn’t.

"I pushed on and thankfully it was OK."

On Sunday, McLaughlin continued the way he finished Saturday, dominating the race after qualifying in pole, half a second faster than his closest rival.

McLaughlin then led from lights to flag and was untroubled throughout the race despite a late Safety Car period. The Ford Mustang showing its strengths, with Coulthard coming home second.

Finishing behind the DJR Team Penske pairing was Jamie Whincup, who claimed his fifth podium for the year.

Following Saturday’s controversial result, McLaughlin was rapt to claim a straightforward win in race 14 and pick up his 10th victory for the year.

"It’s been an amazing weekend, two wins for our team, a pole and a one-two," McLaughlin said.

"Our cars were just ridiculously good and I’m excited for the future and the rest of the year.

"We battled hard, we had a little kerfuffle yesterday, we got our butts kicked and came back here today."

McLaughlin now heads into the next round with a healthy 244 point lead over Coulthard, while Shane van Gisbergen sits in third a further 171 points behind.

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship will head to the Northern Territory for the BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown on 14-16 June.
