Superloop to start Supercars sizzle

Wednesday 29 May, 2019
The Superloop Adelaide 500 will once again begin Supercars' season in 2020.

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship has locked in its first round for 2020 with the season to start in February.

Taking place one week earlier than in 2019, the Superloop Adelaide 500 will kick off the Supercars season for ninth consecutive year on 20 – 23 February, 2020.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said he was thrilled to have the South Australian capital host the first round of the season.
“Superloop Adelaide 500 is one of the standouts of our racing season each year,”  Seamer told supercars.com.

“The incredible range of entertainment on and off track as part of a month of festivities in Adelaide sets it apart as a great celebration for the City.”

Since its inception in 1999, four years after the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix moved to Melbourne, the event has continued to attract fans from around the country, despite the excessive weather in recent years.

In 2019, more than 250,000 fans attended the event over the course of the weekend as Scott McLaughlin got off to the perfect start for his title defence with two wins.

At the conclusion of the event, international band the Red Hot Chilli Peppers put on special concert for Sunday’s 90,000 attending fans.

With the South Australian street circuit confirmed to host the season opener, SA’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway was proud the state was able to keep the event in its timeslot.

“The Superloop Adelaide 500 is a world-class motor sport event which has injected more than $600 million into the state’s economy since its inception, created more than 400 full-time jobs and regularly attracts crowds of more than 250,000 visitors a year,” Minister Ridgway explained.

“Securing the season opener is a real coup for the state and reaffirms our reputation for delivering exceptional events.

“We look forward to attracting the attention of the country’s motor sport enthusiasts and, once again, stage an event which sees flow-on benefits for the city’s hotels, bars, restaurants and retailers.”

As the dates and locations for the 2020 begin to surface, a full Supercars 2020 calendar is expected to be confirmed in early July.
