The Kumho Tyre Super3 Series reaches its final round at Sandown Raceway this weekend with an 18-car field to battle it out as part of the Shannons Nationals.

Part of a strong line up of popular categories, the series joins the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship as a category hosting its final round of the year.

With the series having three races across the weekend, four drivers are in contention to take out the title after what has been an epic season in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship’s third tier.

Only 11 points separate current leader Broc Feeney and 2018 CAMS Australian Formula 4 champion Jayden Ojeda, while Hamish Ribarits and Zak Best remain in the picture despite being more than 50 and 75 points behind Feeney.

While Feeney leads the series, Ojeda heads into the season finale as the man to beat after securing the past three round victories – Ojeda’s most recent being at The Bend Motorsport Park thanks to two race weekend wins.

With very little separating the two drivers, Ojeda remains confident he can pull off something special at a favourite track of his.

“I am pretty stoked about where I am so far because there isn’t much between Broc and myself and it’s going to come down to who has the better weekend,” Ojeda said.

“Quite a bit has gone into our title bid this year and I feel like we have progressed as a team from the start. We have improved quite a lot since the first round, which sets us up nicely for Sandown.

“I am a driver that likes to drive hard and gaining the confidence over the past three rounds has given me the opportunity to back myself in for the contest.

“I love Sandown. Up until I drove at Bathurst this year, it was my favourite track. I really like the nature of the track. It has the characteristics where you either love it or you don’t and for me, I love it. I always seem to run pretty well there.”

Outside of top four front runners, the most notable entries include a number of a fresh faces competing such as Aussie Racing Cars star Joel Heinrich who returns after a positive debut at The Bend.

Young gun Matt McLean and Emily Duggan return to the series after positive starts for the year – Duggan competing in the opening two rounds before having to miss the next two rounds.

The experienced Dean Lillie will also make his Super3 debut behind the wheel of Jim Pollicina’s second ex-Tasman Motorsport VE Commodore at Sandown making him one to keep an eye on during the weekend.

The category will host practice and qualifying on Friday before Saturday’s two races set up the Grand Finale on Sunday afternoon, a race most likely to determine the 2019 Series winner.

Tickets for the Shannons Nationals sixth round are now available with 10 per cent of all sales going to charity partner Very Special Kids.

Fans unable to attend the round can watch via SBS or on the live stream on thenationals.com.au.

The Kumho Tyres Super3 Series forms part of the Shannons Nationals visit to Sandown Raceway and takes place on 20-22 September.
