Targa makes great change to Queensland coast round

Friday 28 February, 2020
The Targa Great Barrier Reef has seen a big change occur in 2020.
This year’s Targa Great Barrier Reef will have a different feel to it after the organisers made a major transformation to the course for the first time since its inauguration in 2018.

Crews competing in the Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship’s second round of 2020 will now enjoy eight brand new stages on the exciting Cassowary Coast, which will see the event’s competitive kilometres extended to 230.97km, an increase of 25 percent year-on-year.

Located 100km south of the event’s base in Cairns, the Cassowary Coast is known for its stunning topography and unique reef location, which will add to the event’s already spectacular views.

With the event injecting an impressive $3 million in the Far North Queensland economy last year, TARGA chief executive Mark Perry was confident the new changes would be approved by the local community and welcomed by competitors.

“TARGA Great Barrier Reef brought this large-scale motorsport event to Far North Queensland that engaged many motoring enthusiasts, along with activating hundreds of volunteers with an interest in cars,” Perry said.

“Aside from injecting direct economic benefits to local business and trades, our various promotion and broadcast platforms offer great publicity value to the destination in which we’re touring.”

“We have identified provisional stages and will be issuing letters to all residents who may be impacted by the event, and encourage anyone with questions to contact TARGA direct.”

Last year saw more than 2000 people have a direct involvement with the event and a remarkable 40,000 spectators attend the TARGAFest, TARGA Expo and the competition stages throughout the three days.

The TARGA Great Barrier Reef will take place around Cairns and other North Queensland regions on 4-6 September.
