Former F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella will race in S5000 at the Australian Grand Prix.
S5000 Australia has secured another big fish for its maiden appearance at this month’s Formula 1 Rolex Australia Grand Prix with former F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella confirmed to compete.

The star driver, who won the 2005 Australian Grand Prix, will be behind the wheel of the chassis Will Brown raced during the category’s rounds at Sandown and The Bend last year.

In a memorable career that spanned 14-years, Fisichella eventually pulled the pin on his 229-race Formula 1 career in 2009 after claiming three race wins and 19 podiums for a number of teams, including Ferrari, Jordan and Renault.

Since retiring from the top level, the 47-year-old has been racing Ferraris in international GT all around the world, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans

This year’s drive will be Fisichella’s second time at Albert Park since retirement, his first being in 2018 for the Motorsport Australia GT Championship and the popular Italian figure was looking forward to getting back out there.

“I am very excited about coming back to a city and a street circuit which mean so much to me,” Fisichella said.

“My Grand Prix win will stay in my heart forever as well as the warmth of the many Australian fans who come every year to Melbourne for a great motorsport spectacle.

“It is also a full comeback to an open wheeler for me, after ten solid years of GT racing and for this I can’t wait until I am going to be behind the wheel of an S5000.”

Fisichella will form part of a 16-car grid during the category’s three races at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2020 on 12-15 March.
