The virtual Chinese Grand Prix in action
It was a busy schedule in the virtual world over the weekend as three international competitions took place and a number of Australians found themselves in action.

Taking part in the second round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Virtual Edition hosted at Silverstone Circuit were four Australians and it was Stephen Grove who led the charge.

With the category completing two rounds at the British circuit, Grove finished on the Pro-Am class podium both times, winning round three and claiming second in round four, while Marc Cini finished third in both rounds.

It was a tough gig for Joey Mawson and Jordan Love, with neither able to break into the outright top three, however the duo will be able to redeem themselves when the series heads to the digital Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 25 April.

There was a bit more to celebrate for Australian Will Power in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge at the virtual Twin Ring Motegi, with the Queenslander once again finishing inside the top three.

Despite starting the race on the front row, it was an impressive effort from the former Indy500 champion, who recovered nicely after a potential detrimental collision to secure his third series podium in four rounds.

Power’s incident with just 10 laps remaining involved DJR Team Penske teammate and New Zealander Scott McLaughlin. The reigning Virgin Australia Supercars Champion ultimately fell to 24th after leading as a result of the impact.

Eventually taking out the victory was Power and McLaughlin’s teammate Simon Pagenaud, who made it two consecutive wins after claiming the Michigan International Speedway round last week.

The American series’ next race will be run on the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday 26 April.

The final event to run over the weekend was the Formula 1’s Chinese Grand Prix with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc once again proving too good for the star studded field, which included a further five Formula 1 drivers.

Claiming second place was Red Bull Racing’s Alex Albon, while virtual Bahrain Grand Prix winner Guanyu Zhou took out the final spot on the podium ahead of Williams’ George Russell.

Carlos Sainz enjoyed his Esports debut with a points finish just one place behind Nicholas Latifi in ninth. Both drivers finished behind 2017 Australian Formula 4 Championship runner-up Liam Lawson who ended the race in eighth.

Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi was occupying ninth until lap 22 when his game shut down forcing him out of the race – a similar issue faced by McLaren’s Lando Norris who was once again a victim of the tech gremlins.

The next Formula 1 virtual Grand Prix will be the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort on 1-3 May.
