Great Greta praised for tough gig

Greta Nason was the 2019 South Australian Rally Official of the Year.
An Officials Coordinator is a particularly important role at every motorsport event, tasked with making sure the loyal volunteers are organised and ready at their posts.

There are many talented individuals who hold this role across the country and in 2019 South Australian Greta Nason was recognised for her stellar efforts in the job.

Having been involved in motorsport since the 1980s, Nason has held a number of positions within the South Australian rally scene, including Clerk of Course and Event Secretary.

However during recent times, she has been the Officials Coordinator at a number of major rally events in the state and it’s a role she has excelled at – so much so that she was awarded the 2019 South Australian Rally Official of the Year.

While it’s been more than 35 years since her and husband Bob joined the Walkerville All Cars Club and got involved as officials, Nason admits there has been no love lost for the sport and she planned to continue volunteering for as long as she could.

“I have just done about every role available as a rally official, except for scrutineering, so It’s a great honour to be recognised for the impact I am having over the previous few years,” Nason said.

“It’s not the first time I have been recognised in my career with my husband and I winning a Service Star in 2017. The Service Star is a great honour, but I really appreciate the Official of the Year award. It’s currently on a wall in the house.

“I would like to thank the people nominated me, who I believe was Andrew Admiraal. I also want to thank my husband too because he supports me a great deal.

“I will continue volunteering in the years to come. I was planning to do some rallies this year, but they have been cancelled, so I will be aiming to get back into the full swing of things next year and I am really looking forward to it.”

As her nominator, Admiraal was full of praise for Nason and believed she was a highly deserving winner of the award.

“There are so many ways to describe Greta and her abilities. She’s been around forever, she is phenomenal and an absolute joy to run events with,” Admiraal said.

“She attends a lot of rallies and has facilitated the officials for most of the state’s major events, including three rounds on the state calendar. Greta is also a great supporter of younger generation of officials coming through.

“Being an Officials Coordinator is a thankless job. I have a lot of respect for that position and a lot of respect for her. Quite simply, she is a much deserving winner.”
