Piastri enjoys successful ARG virtual debut

Thursday 30 April, 2020
FIA Formula 3 Championship driver Oscar Piastri has shown off his skill on the simulator after producing a brilliant performance in the latest carsales ARG eSport Cup round.

Racing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Piastri was one of the wildcard entries to take part and right from the get go, he had a point to prove – claiming the second fastest time in qualifying alongside polesitter Luca Giacomin.

In the round’s first race, Piastri passed Giacomin soon after the race start to move into the lead, which is where he stayed until the chequered flag, crossing the line three-seconds ahead of Trans Am driver Nathan Herne.

“I had to dodge a few lapped cars throughout the race, but it was all good fun and I’ll take the win,” Piastri said.

“Races like this are good for keeping up with my race craft, so it's good to stay active during this tough period.”

Finishing behind the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup winner were Herne, carsales TCR Australia Series regular Dylan O’Keefe and Dunlop Super2 Series driver Thomas Randle.

Herne's fellow title contenders Harley Haber and British Touring Car star Ash Sutton had a tough race after they were caught up in some drama and collided – the duo dropping from the second row to well down the field as a result.

However with the second race being a reverse grid start and Haber once again inside the top 10, he made no mistakes, taking no time to jump from seventh to second.

It didn’t last long for Haber to then snatch the lead and hold firm for the rest of the race, as he cruised to an eight second victory over Randle and Piastri – who both put in stellar efforts to climb from 17th and 20th respectively and finish on the podium.

For Haber, he was thrilled to get back on the winners’ list after a disappointing opening race

“It was a much better performance compared to what the first race was,” Haber said.

“To sift through all the carnage in the second race is the best result I could have asked for and I am looking forward to Phillip Island. I have done one or two laps around there before so we should be all good.”

The ARG eSport Cup returns next week on 6 May at the iconic Phillip Island Race Circuit.
