Caitlin Wood has enjoyed two top-10 finishes in the first round of the W Series Esports League.
Caitlin Wood has enjoyed a solid run in the W Series Esports League’s first outing, after picking up two-top 10 finishes across three races.
Taking place at the virtual Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Italy, Wood got off to a dream start, grabbing pole position for the first race ahead of eventual round winner Beitske Visser.
However Visser would enjoy the better start once the first 15-minute race got underway as she overtook Wood on the first turn, before Wood lost some more ground to Irina Sidorkova and Nerea Marti.
For the remainder of the race, Visser stayed in control ahead of Sidorkova and Marti, while another mistake saw Wood fall slightly down the order, finishing sixth outright.
Like most reverse-grid races across all competitions this lockdown period, there was a chaotic start with a number of cars involved in a messy pileup, but once things settled down, it was Emma Kimilainen who took out top honours ahead of Fabienne Wohlwend and Gosia Rdest, while Wood was unable to make any solid ground, finishing 14th.
In the evening’s final race, Wood once again showed her pace securing pole position, but again missed the opportunity to capitalise off the start and before turn one, she had dropped behind the second row pairing of Marti and Ayla Agren.
Despite a slow start, Visser eventually took control of the race and went on to take the win after grabbing the lead around the midway point, while Wood finished eighth.
At the conclusion of the event, Wood finished the round in eighth place on the standings with 20 points - 29 points shy of outright leader Visser.
The virtual series returns next week with round two at the Circuit of the Americas.
