The Motorsport Australia GT Championship has confirmed it will feature as part of the opening round of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on 14-16 August.
While the Championship’s full calendar is yet to be released, category rights holder Jim Manolios said it was important to confirm the next event as soon as possible, given the lengthy COVID-19 lay off.
“For the last fortnight the calendar has seen many iterations and whilst we are close to revealing the full 2020 Australian GT Championship program, we are awaiting final approval from the various stakeholders before we can reveal that,” Manolios explained.
“That said, we have locked in the season opener (in Sydney) which is important to allow teams to schedule a return to racing, so we wanted to at least release that news as soon as we could.”
The category will take part in two 20-minute practice sessions and two ten minute qualifiers to set the grid for race one, before two 60-minute races are held across the weekend.
Australian GT Category Administrator Kate Harrington said the category had worked closely with Motorsport Australia and a large amount of work had been undertaken to ensure any local COVID-19 restrictions are adhered to, as well as ensuring all competitors and crew remain safe.
“Any decisions we make with respect to ongoing racing will take into account the safety and health of all our teams and staff, that will remain the highest priority,” Harrington added.
Other categories already confirmed for Sydney include: carsales TCR Australia Series, VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship, Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, Australian National Trans Am Series and the Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters.
