Mansell ends debut British F4 season on high

Monday 16 November, 2020
Christian Mansell has won the 2020 British Formula 4 Rookie Cup title.
Christian Mansell has capped off his maiden British Formula 4 Championship season with his best results of the year and the 2020 Rookie Cup title.

It’s been a stellar season for the Australian teenager in the nine-round Championship, which held its final meeting for the year at the famous Brands Hatch circuit, as he claimed podiums in all three races.

Starting Saturday’s race from the second row, a careful and incident free drive from Mansell saw him cross the finish line in outright third place.

As a result of his third podium for the year, Mansell had built enough of a gap at the top of the Rookie Cup standings over rival Frederick Lubin to secure the title with two races left.

With the title locked in, Mansell had a stress-free rest of the weekend as he finished the round’s second outing in P4 thanks to a resilient performance. Having fought his way up the grid after dropping down the field in the early stages of the race, the 15-year-old was then promoted to third place following post-race penalties.

Mansell then made it a hat-trick of podiums with his best result of the weekend when he secured a runner-up placing in the rain-shortened final race of the season.

Conditions proved quite difficult for the drivers as the competition’s top three drivers all spun out towards the start race, leaving Mansell to move to the front of the grid and leading the pack.

While he was unable to hold onto the lead after teammate and outright title contender Zak O'Sullivan passed him on lap eight, Mansell was able to retain his position of second and finish the year on a high.

Mansell ends his first international campaign in seventh place on the outright championship standings having picked up one race win, four podiums and points finishes in every race bar four.
