The MG Car Club of Newcastle (MGCCN) will begin its 2021 season of motorsport this weekend as the first round of the Ringwood Park Tar Series Hillclimb Championship takes place at Ringwood Park Motorsport Track.

A full field of competitors are expected to attend, with at least six new names to feature on the entry list and four junior contestants progressing into the senior ranks.

Twelve classes will feature during the season opener, with a number of top contenders likely to be running in the open wheelers, while other notable categories will be the Production Sports Cars, Over 2 Litres and the All-Wheel Drive Supercharged classes.

Clerk of Course David Atkins believed officials and competitors were looking forward to getting back into competitive motorsport again after the Christmas/New Year break.

“We’re all pretty excited to get things underway. We’ve had two months off, and I think most of our members are keen to get back,” Atkins said.

“No one outside of the club will be in attendance, so only members from our jurisdiction will be competing in this hill climb.”

The second half of the 2020 season was a busy period for the club, with the Return to Race document released by Motorsport Australia allowing them to host a number of events in a short amount of time.

This year, it will just as busy in the first half for the New South Wales based club as they run hill climbs in Bathurst and Cooperbung not long after this weekend’s season opener.

As the first race meeting of 2021 takes place, Atkins was hoping for a smooth running where competitors will have fun and get a good start to the year.

“Our main aim, as always, is to have a great day of motorsport,” Atkins added.

“We are all hoping for fine weather and looking forward to getting back into it.”

In a major boost for the club, spectators have been approved to be attend the event with a cap of 3,000 allowed to watch the action.

Round 1 of the Ringwood Hillclimb Tar Series will be held at Ringwood Park Motorsport Track on Sunday 7 February.
