The Australian Prototype Series (APS) has finalised its 2021 calendar, with the category joining the Repco Supercars Championship support field during the year.

Starting its season at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships in May, the category will then join the Repco Supercars Championship for a highly anticipated event at the Winton SuperSprint later that same month.

The excitement continues with a third round at the popular Sandown round of the Shannons in September, before the Series finale takes place at The Bend Motorsport Park in October.

The category is also expected to confirm a brand new Endurance Trophy event for 2021, which will take place at the conclusion of the Series at a location to be confirmed.

APS CEO Paul Trengove said there was plenty of excitement about the year ahead, following a tough 2020 for all motorsport competitors.

“We cannot wait to go racing again in 2021 and are really excited with the variety and quality of events on our calendar this year,” Trengove explained.

“Most notably, joining the Repco Supercars Championship in Winton will give our category an extra boost and provide our growing competitor base with plenty of exposure and close racing.

“Likewise, as a regular category on the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships card, we’re really excited about the growing stature of these events and look forward to continuing to race alongside some of Australia’s best motorsport categories.”

Trengove said despite 2020 being a difficult year for sport in general, the APS is seeing plenty of growth – highlighted by the new competitors who were part of the OTR South Australian Sports Car Invitational Series in the back half of 2020.

“It was certainly a challenging off season, but there are some really positive signs for the Series, with four brand new Wolf Racing Cars on their way to Australia from Italy. The investment in this new machinery by our competitors is a great vote of confidence in the Australian Prototype Series and we can’t wait to get racing.

“We’ve also got some amazing new talent coming through the field to complement that new machinery and provide plenty of excitement – it will really spice up the racing and provide a great spectacle for fans too.”
