Impressive results for Aussies abroad

Alex Peroni had his first race since mid July.
Le Mans Cup
Andres Latorre and Garnet Patterson have turned in an impressive performance during their debut on the Le Mans circuit as part of the Michelin Le Mans Cup.

Behind the wheel of the Mühlner Motorsport prepared Duquiene D08 LMP3, the duo featured in a huge field of more than 45 teams and held their own against talented drivers from around the world during both of the category’s two races.

In the first outing, Patterson had done a brilliant job to steer the car to 12th  in qualifying and then produced a drive just as inspiring in the race to help the team finish inside the top 10.

With smart team strategy making the driver change pit stop flow seamlessly, the duo ended up finishing the race in sixth place outright.

For the second race, Latorre had been given the responsibility of qualifying and was on track to put the car in the top 10 again, however yellow flags on every one of his fast laps prevented him from securing a decent place.

Starting from P33, the duo delivered a masterclass of a different kind, charging through the field during the race and making up 20 places to eventually cross the line in a highly respectable 13th place.

The duo is yet to confirm their plans post-event.

Indy Car
Will Power has continued his resurgence in the NTT IndyCar series claiming a second consecutive podium for the first time in 2021.

In what has been a disappointing season for the Queenslander, Power backed up his brilliant win from last week with a third place during the weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in Illinois.

The weekend got off to the perfect start for Power as he pipped Colin Herta in qualifying to pick up his first pole position of the year and the 63rd for his career.

Unfortunately, Power didn’t get to enjoy the same fortune as he did last week and was only able to hold onto the lead for just one lap as Herta took control early and would go on to lead the field for a total of 100 laps, before suffering mechanical issues.

With Sebastien Bourdais and Pato O'Ward also enjoying leading laps during the race, Power’s Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden eventually took top spot halfway through the 260-lap race and never relinquished it as he stormed home to his second win of the year.

Behind him was O’Ward, who assumed the outright series lead from Spaniard Álex Palou, while Power was made to work hard for his podium, having won an entertaining duel with three-time Supercars champion and teammate Scott McLaughlin.

Despite not getting the podium, McLaughlin, who is enjoying a stellar rookie year in the series, ended the race in fourth place and claimed his highest career finish in the series.

Power’s podium did not see him climb any higher on the outright standings, however the ninth placed driver is now just nine points off Herta in sixth.

It’s now a two-week break for the series before it heads to Portland on 12 September for the first of three consecutive weekends to wrap up the season.

Indy Lights
Alex Peroni celebrated receiving his Peter Brock award in style over the weekend with a decent outing during Indy Lights first meeting since the mid-season break.

Making his oval circuit debut, the Tasmanian held himself well throughout both practice sessions before qualifying in ninth and eighth respectively.

In the opening race, Peroni managed to make up quite a few places as there was a bit of chaos ahead of him before the 21-year-old eventually secured a top five finish for the seventh time this year.

In the second race, Peroni just missed out on fifth place again as he made up two places on the grid to finish in a respectable sixth.

With more points on offer for the round due to it being on Gateway Motorsports Park's oval circuit, Peroni ended up moving up a spot on the outright standings to eighth overall and moved to just 17 points off Benjamin Pederson in fourth.

Like Indycar, the series will now have a two-week break before returning for the Grand Prix of Portland on 12 September.
