Alex Peroni is hopeful that receiving his Peter Brock Medal will be the boost he needs to build on some form in the remaining Indy Lights Series rounds for 2021.
Currently based in Florida, Peroni was
named as the 2020 Peter Brock medalist in December after a stellar year behind the wheel during the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The Tasmanian’s season in Formula 1’s third tier saw him pick up a number of podiums and finish in the overall top 10 – a brilliant result considering his horrific accident at the end of 2019.
Unfortunately, the award’s arrival was delayed due to the pandemic, but Peroni was presented the trophy at the Indy Light’s most recent round in Illinois – which was the Aussie’s first experience at an oval race.
Presenting Peroni with the award ahead of the race meeting was Australian IndyCar superstar Will Power and former Senator for Tasmania, David Bushby, who is currently serving as Australia's Consul-General in Chicago.
While Peroni’s rookie year in Indycar’s second tier hasn’t been as successful as he first anticipated, the 21-year-old believed this was the boost he needed.
“After the tough year I have been having, it was really cool to receive the Peter Brock award and to have David and Will present it to me in front of the whole Indycar paddock was awesome,” Peroni said.
“Will was fantastic. Obviously he met Peter and Bev Brock when he first started out, so he shared some stories about them and was really supportive about winning the award.
“This year has been a year where I just haven’t got the results I was hoping for and sometimes the doubt sets it as to whether I can keep progressing – but to receive this award just gives me that little bit of extra confidence knowing I am on the right track.
“I always knew it was going to be a tough year and a bit of a learning curve, but we were definitely hoping for more. We have been unlucky with some mechanical issues but realistically the pace just hasn’t been there.
“That is why this award is fantastic and I am highly grateful to Motorsport Australia, Bev and all of those people who believed I was a deserving recipient.
“It really is an honour to be alongside names like Mark Webber, Craig Lowndes and of course Peter Brock who was my idol growing up.”
Currently sitting eighth on the standings, Peroni has three rounds remaining in the 2021 Indy Lights season with the next round to be the Grand Prix of Portland on 12 September.
