Daniel Ricciardo has secured his highest finish for McLaren in unique fashion after placing fourth in the Belgian Grand Prix overnight.

With heavy rain consistently falling on the famous Spa-Francorchamps for much of Sunday, the poor weather conditions caused multiple delays to the start of the race.

Following multiple attempts to get the race started, eventually the 20 drivers completed four laps of the circuit behind the safety car across the three-hour race window to allow a classification,

As a result of the poor visibility and limited laps, only half points were awarded to the drivers, ultimately rewarding them for where they qualified.

In incredible circumstances, pole sitter Max Verstappen was handed the victory over Williams’ George Russell who secured his first career podium and a first for Williams since 2017.

Lewis Hamilton finished in third place to maintain his Formula 1 championship lead over Verstappen, while Ricciardo ended his 200th race start in fourth ahead of Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel.

Ricciardo said he was disappointed not to be able to fight for a podium but understood the decision to cancel the race.

“Crazy, crazy day, crazy circumstances,” Ricciardo said once the race was called off.

“It’s lucky we don’t get these situations very often but it is what it is. Sorry to the fans and everyone that stayed out here all day to watch us race, they were awesome.

“We were really hoping to get a race and obviously it didn’t happen, but it’s no-one’s fault, it’s just the situation and circumstances today. We’ve got two races on consecutive weekends now so hopefully that makes up for it.

“It made quali more important, so I’m happy I managed to earn a good position yesterday.”

Rounding out the top 10 were Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Charles Leclerc, Nicholas Latifi and Carlos Sainz.

For the first time in his career and adding to the bizarreness of the afternoon, Haas’ Nikita Mazepin recorded the fastest lap time of the race, however received no bonus point given he was outside the top 10.

It’s back-to-back rounds for the FIA Formula 1 World Championship with Circuit Zandvoort to host the return of the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday 5 September.
