After seven rounds in the Indy Light series, Alex Peroni has opted to pull out of the US based series to focus on a return to Europe in 2022.
Having spent six years in Europe between after first contesting the Italian Formula 4 Championship in 2015, Peroni made the decision to head to the US for a new opportunity this season.
Signing with UK outfit Carlin Motorsport, Peroni endured a mixed year behind the wheel during his rookie season in the NTT IndyCar Series’ second tier.
Peroni enjoyed a decent start to life in the series, picking up three top five finishes and with a podium after the first six races.
Unfortunately, that podium in Indianapolis was as good as it got for the Tasmanian as he placed fourth twice either side of two last place finishes in the weekends that followed.
A tough round in Ohio with two P9s ahead of the summer break was followed by another top five finish upon his return, however it was enough for Peroni to decide to head back to Europe.
“I’m looking forward to some exciting opportunities that 2022 has in store for me and a return to racing where I can mix it with the front runners,” Peroni said.
“This year hasn’t lived up to our expectations in racing performance, however I’ve really enjoyed visiting the US for the first time and living here for the past seven months.
“I’d like to thank all of the incredibly friendly and welcoming people in the US that I met on my journey. The warm welcomes I received at race events in particular were fantastic.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my incredible sponsors and supporters, particularly Blundstone, Richardson Devine Marine and the wonderful state of Tasmania and its great people who have done so much to help me get to where I am. I look forward to your support moving forward.
“I wish Carlin the best for their future in Indy Lights and I thank them for the opportunity provided to me this year. I’m also grateful to everyone involved in the ‘Road to Indy’ organisation who did so much to help me make the leap to US racing.”
Peroni has enjoyed plenty of success in Europe since his arrival in 2015, with a 2016 Complete V de V Challenge Monoplace title, a memorable race victory at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix in the Formula Renault Eurocup Series and two podiums in the 2020 Formula 3 Championship making up his notable results.
The 21-year-old is yet to announce where he plans to race in 2022 soon.
