Williams locks in F2 test drive

Thursday 11 November, 2021
Calan Williams will test a Formula 2 car in December.
After another development year in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, Calan Williams has been handed a major boost ahead of 2022 having secured a seat with Trident Motorsport for Formula 2 post-season testing.

Williams spent the past two years in Formula 3 with the struggling Jenzer Motorsport and is now looking at making the step up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship next year.

With post-season testing for Formula 2 to begin at the conclusion of the current season in December, the West Australian’s opportunity to test with the this year’s Formula 3 champions could give him the help he needs to showcase his ability against the world’s best young talent.

The 21-year-old is currently working with the team in preparation for testing as he looks to give himself the best chance for his first time behind the wheel of a Formula 2 car.

“I can’t wait to have my first taste of Formula 2 with such a professional team in Trident Motorsport. They’ve had great results this year, with their highlight being winning the teams’ championship in Formula 3,” Williams said.

“I’ve been preparing physically for the testing for the past few months. The step up to a car which is heavier, and corners and accelerates faster than anything I’ve ever experienced before will push me even further, so I need to be ready. I’m sure the three-day program will also be intense, so I’ll have my endurance tested as well.

“Since the end of the FIA F3 season, I’ve been working hard with the team at their workshop in Italy. Their passion and professionalism is unbelievable, and it’s so exciting for me to be in that environment - within a group of people all working hard to carry each other forward.

“From what I am learning on the team’s simulator, the F2 car requires a much different driving style than the F3. I’m confident that the work I’m putting in to be as precise as possible with this car’s specific driving style will pay dividends at the test.”

Trident Team Manager Giacomo Ricci was pleased with William’s ability and was looking forward to working with him for testing.

“Calan has great potential, and we are very pleased to be working together for the testing in Abu Dhabi,” Ricci added.

“We know he has more to express as he has all the characteristics of a driver to achieve remarkable results.

“During the weeks of preparation, we were able to create a great feeling with the driver, in addition to a great working pace that I am sure will lead to very good results.”

Williams won’t be the only Australian testing in Formula 2 later this year with Jack Doohan also to test, however the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship runner-up is yet to confirm his place.

The FIA Formula 2 Championship post-season testing will take place at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on 16-18 December.
