South Australian funding pledge

The South Australian Opposition will commit $2 million dollars to motorsport if elected in March.
The South Australian Opposition has announced it will commit to a $2 million dollar grant program for car clubs throughout South Australia should it be elected in 2022.

With the South Australia elections in March, 2022, one of the main objectives of the proposed grant scheme will be to see more classic and historic cars back on the road, which will be achieved through $500,000 being distributed annually to registered classic and historical car clubs over the course of four years.

In addition to the grant, the Opposition has committed to adjusting the conditional registration scheme limit from 30 years to 25 years or older, as well as including more individually constructed vehicles – meaning there will be more historic vehicles eligible for coverage in the scheme.

Finally, should the Opposition form Government in March, it has also committed to bringing back the Adelaide 500 and the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

SA Labor Leader Peter Malinauskas believed his party’s commitments to the classic and historic car scheme, as well as the Adelaide 500 and Adelaide Motorsport Festival would have benefits for the local automotive industry.

“South Australia has a proud history of car manufacturing and motorsport events, and we want to not only preserve that reputation – we want to grow it,” Malinauskas said.

“This is about more than just growing our motorsport and car community; it is also about supporting jobs and the economy.

“Events like the car club runs, the Adelaide Motorsport Festival and Adelaide 500 support jobs in our tourism, hospitality, and retail industries.”

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said this election commitment to motorsport highlighted its importance to South Australians.

“We are pleased to see this support being promised for the motorsport community. We are certainly hopeful that both major parties are able to support motorsport in South Australia and see the wide-reaching benefits, no matter who is elected,” Arocca said.

“A number of states have already demonstrated their commitment  to  supporting the growth of motorsport through grant programs in recent years, and it’s great to see the South Australian Opposition commit to this funding as part of their election promises for the 2022 ballot.”
