A Radical fresh start for sportscar category

Monday 24 January, 2022
A new look Radical Cup Australia will begin in 2022.
2022 will herald a new era for Australian Radical competitors after the formation of the brand-new Radical Cup Australia.

A joint venture between the country’s two biggest Radical distributors, the new category will be fully integrated and supported with Radical Sportscars worldwide and will have five rounds making up its inaugural season.

The first four rounds of the new series’ calendar will be run in conjunction with the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships, while the details for the fifth and final round have yet to be locked in.

Spearheading the category is Wanneroo-based Arise Racing, who will manage Radical Australia West, and Sydney’s Garth Walden Racing Australia, who will run Radical Australia East, while experienced administrator Charise Bristow will oversee the operation having been appointed as Category Manager for 2022.

“It’s exciting to be involved with a new era for Radical Sports Cars in Australia,” Bristow said.

“We are starting from a clean sheet of paper with fresh ideas and a new approach at how to operate the category.

“The team behind the new series have invested into making sure that it can be run at the highest possible standard and make it the best experience possible for our competitors and for those who enjoy the racing.

“We have also worked closely with Motorsport Australia to secure a strong calendar at key Shannons events, with an exciting location for the fifth round yet to be announced.

“It’s shaping up to be a really exciting season with lots more news to come.”

The 2022 season will see the series in four different states for the confirmed rounds, starting with Victoria’s famous Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in March.

In May, Sydney Motorsport Park will host round two before the series heads north for the third round at Queensland Raceway in August. The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia will be the destination for the penultimate round of the 2022 season two months later.

With the series to follow established global Radical Cup standards, Garth Walden, who will be representing the Radical Australia East, was excited for the new era to begin.

“As a competitor, GWR Australia has had a long relationship with Radical competition, so we understand what the competitors are looking for in the product they are offered,” Walden said.

“It’s exciting for us to partner up with the team at Radical Australia West and our other partners to start fresh with the new Radical Cup Australia.

“Radical racing has a long and quite successful history in Australia so we will be using that base and building on it with the new series moving forward.”

Radical Australia West’s Jordan Oon echoed Walden’s comments and was looking forward to the fresh start.

There is a lot of motorsport knowledge going into this project to make sure it can operate at the highest possible level,” Oon added.

“The people behind the scenes all know what it takes to put on a well-run and competitive championship for our customers on both sides of the country.

“It’s a fresh start for Radical in Australia and the new Radical Cup Australia will be a great showcase for the brand, the cars and the racing.”

The sporting regulations for the new series will be available in the coming weeks, while fans can follow the new series through social media channels and via a website to be released shortly.
