A new look Australian Formula Ford Series will begin this weekend as the category begins a new chapter in its history.

After record breaking events in 2021, the Motorsport Australia Victorian Circuit Racing Championships returns for the first round of the 2022 season this weekend.

Hosting the season opener will be the MG Car Club Victoria as hundreds of entries are once again expected to roll up to the famous Sandown Raceway for its first major race meeting for the year.

With 11 categories expected to feature on the jam-packed weekend, there is one that will particularly pique the interest of motorsport fans - Formula Ford.

While the category has long been a mainstay of the Victorian Circuit Racing Championships, this weekend will mark the first event for the category since its return to national status with Motorsport Australia.

And the Australian Formula Ford Series will start off its season with a bang as it hosts seven rounds in 2022 with visits to four states as part of the calendar.

The series will begin its year off with the first three rounds in Victoria, starting at this weekend’s Sandown round before joining up with the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships next month at Phillip Island. The third round then takes place Winton in May as a Supercars support category.

Sydney Motorsport Park hosts the next round, before the Series heads north for its first ever round at Morgan Park.

The category will then head to The Bend Motorsport Park for the penultimate round of the season, before wrapping up at Eastern Creek for a second visit at the end of October.

Ahead of the opening round of the 2022 season, Series Administrator Phil Marrinon was looking forward to getting the new era underway this weekend.

“We’re really excited for what should be a massive year and to have 36 cars entered in the first round at Sandown is the perfect start,” Marrinon said.

“Of those 36, 20 are series registered which is a great number and a lot of them are new faces, so there are quite a few things to look forward to this year in terms of where the series is at.

“I think the best thing about this year is that we are visiting four different states and this makes it a great national competition as it allows everyone to experience both home and interstate tracks.

“We would have liked to have made it out to WA and Tasmania, although it’s just a bit too expensive for that. Four states is still fantastic and I think a lot of people are looking forward to going to Morgan Park as we’ve heard it really suits Formula Ford cars.

“The highlights will certainly be our rounds with the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships in March and Supercars in May, but we’re focused on a big weekend at Sandown.”

The Series’ Sandown round this weekend will see them have one qualifying session on Saturday morning, one race on Saturday afternoon and two races on Sunday.

Other categories to feature at Sandown this weekend include the Hyundai Excels, Historic Touring Cars and the Porsche 944 Challenge.
