Redhead charges to emphatic Rallysprint win

Friday 10 February, 2023
TME Motorsport finished with the first and second fastest times in the fourth round of the Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series.
Josh Redhead has secured his second victory in the 2022/2023 Whiteline Tarmac Rallysprint Series season thanks to a strong run in the latter half of the event.

With a huge field of 53 competitors entered in the fourth round of the season, it was Redhead who proved a dominant force behind the wheel of the TME Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo V 199.

Finishing in second place was the number one car of Phil Heafey, while Lance Arundel rounded out the podium.

Although it was a tight battle at the top between Redhead and Heafey throughout the evening, it was actually the second TME Motorsport entry of David Calabria who drew first blood with a lightning quick run on the opener.

Finishing three seconds faster than Heafey and almost four ahead of his teammate, Calabria was looking in hot form, only for his fortunes to be turned upside down in the next run when his Mitsubishi Evo 7 200’s gearbox was destroyed – retiring him for the rest of the night.

Seizing the opportunity, Heafey ended up recording his fastest time for the event on that same run and charging to the outright lead, while Redhead was only one tenth slower.

However, from that point onwards, it was the Redhead show as the 27-year-old went on to win the remaining three runs of the event.

With each run, Redhead continued to get faster and broke away from Heafey on the overall standings, before recording an event-high 2:36.8040 – more than one second faster than Heafey’s best time.

Remarkably, Heafey was unable to steer his Mitsubishi Lancer EV to a better time than Calabria’s opener, giving the latter the second fastest time overall and a small win in what was a disappointing night overall.

Despite Calabria’s DNF, it was still a brilliant night for the team as Redhead claimed his second win in three rounds.

“We had a pretty good night considering what happened to Dave and while it is great to have won, it’s a bit sad that both cars didn’t finish,” Redhead said.

“It’s always good when both cars finish and get a result as it’s really tight at the top, but unfortunately that didn’t happen this week.

“We had a good night where everything went our way and as the event progressed, we just got more and more comfortable and put some amazing times forward, which I am stoked about.

“Phil is such a strong competitor, and he constantly sets the benchmark, so it’s really cool and rewarding to be a smaller family team and come out and produce the result we did.

“It’s still early days for us. This was the car’s fourth event which makes it a big learning curve for us. Of course, there have been some teething problems, but we are making progress in leaps and bounds and it’s definitely exciting.

“I’d just like to make a huge shout out to Northshore Sporting Car Club for putting on a world class event. It was great to see a variety of cars and people in attendance. We’re already looking forward to the final round.”
