Reigning Repco Supercars Champion Shane van Gisbergen has made history, securing the first race win of the Gen3 era.

The Chevrolet Camaro pilot started from fifth on the grid, but it wasn’t long before his Red Bull Ampol entry was back in familiar territory at the front of the field.

It was a terrific start for Triple Eight, with Broc Feeney finishing the race in second, ahead of Ford Mustang pilot Cameron Waters rounding out the podium.

van Gisbergen made it look easy to take an early Championship lead after a strong opening to his title defence.

The Kiwi used strategy and speed to power his way through the field, winning the race by more than eleven seconds.

The early stages saw an interesting battle between Kostecki, Waters, van Gisbergen and Feeney, with the new era cars following closely for the opening third of the race – providing plenty of promise for the year ahead.

After the first set of stops, van Gisbergen took on less fuel to secure track position and set quick times to allow him to gap the rest of the field when his second stop came around.

From there, it was all van Gisbergen who controlled the race without any trouble and steered his Camaro to the chequered flag.

“The team has given us two great cars, but tomorrow will be tough,” van Gisbergen said.

“I have to thank the team, one-two on the first race out – what a pleasure.”

The new cars also proved to be ultra-reliable, with only one DNF in Nick Percat in Saturday’s opening race.

Sunday’s action resumes with qualifying, the Top 10 Shootout and a second 250km race, and with rain predicted the racing is expected to excite.

The day’s racing will be broadcast live across the Seven Network and Fox Sports/Kayo.
