The Light Car Club of Canberra will hold the second round of the National Patios ACT Khanacross Series this weekend, with a solid field of 30 competitors entered in the event.
Taking place at the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club, the event will see competitors get eight runs across the day, including two passes of the venue’s regular three courses.
Event organisers will also continue with the new format change implemented this year, which will see competitors completing one run of a combined long course and a separate course to complete while they wait.
Having introduced the new combined course for the season’s opening round in February, Clerk of Course Ryan Freeman was pleased with the progress the series was making.
“This series is something we offer in Canberra as there isn’t a lot of space to do big events, which is why we get good numbers. It’s also an opportunity to aim the event to juniors and get them into motorsport,” Freeman said.
“We used to run the three courses four times over, but we got a bit of feedback from members in the off-season about implementing a longer course.
“Being restricted with space, we worked out that we could combine a few of the short courses to make a long one and when we did it for round one, there was a lot of positive feedback as it gave competitors time to focus on technique and get settled as opposed to short runs where it goes quick.
“And I think having the number of entries we do enables us to make those changes and give competitors a good amount of runs instead of stressing and trying to squeeze them through.”
With the event itself in a good place, the series once was also on the incline with around 30 competitors again entered in the event.
Not only is the quantity of competitors at a healthy number, but the quality is just as good with the top four from the opening round of the season to continue their title battle, including the round winner in Freeman.
Also part of that top four group is the event’s most notable competitor in former Motorsport Australia SXS Championship star Tim Liston, who will be behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza.
Other contenders entered in the event include Evan Pyne and Steve Kent, and Freeman was excited for the competition.
“A lot of our regulars are entered in the round, so from a competition point of view, it should be quite interesting,” Freeman added.
“Tim is obviously one of the bigger names with a wealth of experience, but Evan and Steve are just competitive and experienced, with Steve bringing a very powerful Mini and Evan who is looking to move into rally this year – so he has stepped up to another level.
“We also have three newcomers, which is great for growing the competition.
“A big thanks to National Patios for once again throwing their support to the series by providing some gear and equipment that helps us run the event.”
