After a dramatic, yet entertaining weekend at CARCO.com.au Raceway for the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint, the Repco Supercars Championship is back for the highly anticipated Ned Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.

There is plenty to look forward to for this weekend’s round, which will be held at Symmons Plains Raceway – the home of the famous turn four hairpin.

A short burst circuit where there is little room for error, the quickfire all-important qualifying sessions will see a mountain of pressure on teams and drivers to get good results straight out of the lane.

Throw in what is fast becoming a hugely exciting title fight, a couple of major milestones and an impressive collection of off-track activations and this weekend will certainly deliver for fans around the country.

The popular Launceston-based circuit is the shortest on the Supercars calendar and follows the second shortest in Perth, with a lap of both tracks completed in less than one minute.

Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen holds the current lap record of the 2.4km circuit, which sits at just over 50 seconds, meaning both qualifying traffic and race strategy will be crucial for every driver.

Known for the hairpin that sees drivers go from 240kmph to just 40kmph almost instantly, the circuit has been a mainstay for Australia’s premier racing category for more than half a century.

This weekend, the circuit will celebrate its 50th ATCC/Supercars round having first hosted the championship in 1969. Every year, barring four for renovations and one for COVID-19, the circuit has been on the Supercars’calendar.

Only Sandown has hosted more rounds with 52.

Other milestones to occur this weekend include Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Nick Percat, who will notch up his 300th race start on Sunday afternoon and hoping for a reversal of his recent poor form. Another milestone of note could also fall, with the potential 50th Supercars podium for Erebus Motorsport.

Led by current championship leader, Brodie Kostecki, the Victorian outfit has been in remarkable form this year and providing the ever-successful Triple Eight Race Engineering with a serious title challenge.

With its first podium coming back in 2014, Erebus’ tally currently sits at 48 and interestingly, a quarter of those have come this season alone – courtesy of four double podiums in nine starts from Kostecki and Will Brown.

Kostecki himself is enjoying a rich run of form, which includes two wins and podium finishes in all but one race this year.

The West Australian has a healthy 100-point lead over Percat’s Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Chaz Mostert, while van Gisbergen occupies third place 36 points behind and has a similar gap over the fourth placed Brown.

With Feeney rounding out the top five after his second win of the season in WA, there is no doubt Erebus and Triple Eight’s new rivalry will be pushed another step this weekend.

Adding to the spectacle will be a strong support bill made up of the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia, the Australian Formula Ford Series and the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series.

Off track, the entertainment is just as impressive with attendees able to enjoy activations such as the Matt Hall Airshow, Island State Drift Demonstrations and Borys Zagrocki Extreme Bicycle Stunts.

The Ned Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint takes place at Symmons Plains on 19-21 May.
