Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series

Tom Oliphant and series leader Bailey Sweeny shared the Sunday spoils in the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series after a fascinating day of racing.

The Englishman etched his name into a talented list of TCR winners after winning the reverse grid race in convincing fashion ahead of newcomer Clay Richards.

The win means that little bit more considering the fact that he was without the Lync & Co after an impressive debut in Phillip Island.

Later on in the afternoon, Sweeny crossed the line with the second largest winning margin in series history, 20-seconds ahead of teammate Josh Buchan in second.

The race wasn’t without drama, with Michael Clemente crashing in the final moments after a tangle up with Buchan and Zac Soutar – an incident currently under investigation.

The HMO Customer Racing teammates locked out the top two spots on the outright podium, with Sweeny standing tall on top while extending his lead in the standings.

Buchan would finish the weekend in second while Soutar rounds out the top three.

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series will next feature at the Queensland Raceway on 11-13 August.

 

National Trans Am Series

AWC GRM’s Lochie Dalton enjoyed a clean sweep of National Trans Am Series wins after taking out both of Sunday’s races.

A composed performance in the opening race saw the Tasmanian finish just over a second clear of the impressive Cody Gillis, while James Moffat rounded out the top three after passing Ben Grice.

An extended final race of the weekend saw Dalton once again lead from start to finish across the 100km race, controlling the grid on the rolling start as well as a safety car restart in the dying stages.

Coming home in second place was Moffat, making the move on Gillis to ruin the 24-year-olds run of second place finishes across the weekend.

It was still three podiums out of three for Gillis – an impressive feat considering it is only his third round competing in the series.

The weekend’s results see an obvious winner in Dalton, who closes the gap in the standings to teammate and rival Moffat – who finished third outright behind Gillis.

The National Trans Am Series will return for the next round of the Shannons SpeedSeries at Queensland Raceway on 11-13 August.

Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters

Series leader Steve Johnson and series legend John Bowe were victorious across two Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters races on Sunday.

Steve Johnson led from start to finish to take his second series victory of the weekend in the days opening race.

The Hancock Racing entry steered clear of any chaos at the race start to build a gap ahead of Adam Garwood, and the fast-starting Andrew Fisher.

Garwood started to close the gap on the leading Johnson but ultimately ran out of time, finishing just over five-tenths of a second behind the series leader.

It was an incredible performance from Bowe to find himself a further four seconds back and on the podium after his Rare Spares / PAYNTER DIXON team were up until 4:30am repairing the car in time for the race.

Bowe then ensured a fairytale ending at the Winton Motor Raceway after taking victory in the final race of the weekend.

Starting the race in second, the series veteran controlled the rolling start to make his way past Johnson, setting up an intriguing battle between the two which would play out until the final moments of the race.

Coming home in a comfortable third place was Saturday’s Trophy Race winner Andrew Fisher.

Despite not taking victory, Johnson’s second place finish secured the round win ahead of Fisher and local legend and race three winner Bowe.

S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship

Joey Mawson made it a trio of wins after dominating across two S5000 Australian Drivers Championship races on Sunday.

The first race of the day was rather chaotic with four cars being taken out at the race start – Blake Purdie receiving a 20 point penalty as a result.

Team Valvoline GRM’s Aaron Cameron was comfortably holding down second before making an unforced error when he locked the rears at turn seven and slid wide, allowing James Golding to take his place.

Though Golding initially began to close the gap to Mawson, the ACM Finance.com entry would pull out the margin once again, and Mawson cruised to his second victory of the weekend setting the fastest lap of the race on the final lap.

The third and final race of the weekend proved less dramatic, with the series leader leading from start to finish to make it three race wins from three ahead of Golding and Cameron.

It was a disaster of a weekend for Webster who was unable to close the gap in the race for the series title.

The win means Mawson leaves Winton with his second round victory of the season, with Golding and cameron standing alongside him on the podium.

The S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship will next feature at the Beaurepairs Sydney SuperSprint on 28-30 July.

Kumho V8 Touring Car Series

Jude Bargwanna has completed a grand slam at the Hi-Tec Oils Race Winton round after taking another two Kumho V8 Touring Car Victories at the Winton Raceway.

While the series leader finished eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in MoComm Motorsports Comms Jim Pollicina in the opening race, the latter had the lead in the opening stages after Bargwanna’s Ford Falcon FG was slow off the line.

But it was no problem for the round winner as he was able to work his way through the grid with ease to claim his second victory of the weekend.

Pollicina survived a late charge to cross the line in second place ahead of Tilley, while Tony Evangelou was able to make it back-to-back fourth place finishes ahead of the struggling Auddino in the Ford Falcon BF.

The dominant Bargwanna would then go untroubled to the flag in the final race, crossing the line 15 seconds clear of Tilley who was able to pull away a further five seconds ahead of Pollicina’s Holden Commodore VE.

Bargwanna, Tilley and Pollicina filled the top three on the outright podium as expected – with Pollicina leading the way in the race for the Kumho Cup.

The Kumho V8 Touring Car Series will again join the Shannons SpeedSeries calendar at the Queensland Raceway on 11-13 August.

Precision National Sports Sedan Series

Newcomer Josh Haynes claimed a chaotic opening race of the day which saw three contenders all drop out throughout the opening laps.

2022 champion Jordan Caruso was fast off the line and held the lead in the initial stages before the Hyundai safety car was deployed after Steve Tamasi found the tyre wall at turn two – ending his weekend as a result.

Also dropping out was race one winner Tony Ricciardello with his Alfa Romeo GTV coming to a stop at a similar point in time.

Sitting comfortably in the lead, Caruso was next to join Tamasi and Ricciardello on the sidelines after finding himself bogged at the run-off of turn one – handing Haynes the lead of the race and eventually the win.

Starting the second race of the day from the rear of the grid, both Caruso and Ricciardello moved up as many as 20 positions in only five laps to once again battle it out for the lead.

But the reigning champion proved too strong, finishing in first place ahead of Ricciardello.

Despite not picking up a race win, Ashley Jarvis will walk away with the round victory after two podium finishes over Michael Robinson, while Birol Cetin rounds out the top three.

The second round of the Precision National Sport Sedan Series will take place at the Queensland Raceway on 4-6 August.

Australian Formula Ford Series

Matthew Hillyer claimed the one and only race win on Sunday morning at Hi-Tec Oils Race Winton after outlasting title rival Zak Lobko and Eddy Beswick.

The Team Sonic driver led the race from the outset, controlling the field while intriguing battles for podium positions played out.

Altatek Racing’s Kobi Williams had both Lobko and Beswick not far behind, before soon surrendering the position to the eventual podium-getters with Lobko unable to catch the leading Hillyer in time by race end.

The result also mirrored the weekend’s outright podium finishers, with the trio all having meaningful impacts on the series title race – but it will be Hillyer who reclaims that top spot after losing out to Lobko in Tasmania last month.

The fifth round of the Australian Formula Ford Series will take place at Sandown Raceway on 11-13 August.
