Oscar Piastri has gathered some valuable points in FIA Formula 1 World Championship’s return after the summer break, while Daniel Ricciardo is set for a stint on the sidelines after breaking his hand in Friday practice.

The West Australian sustained the injury after hitting the barrier at turn three of the challenging Zandvoort Circuit, avoiding a collision with Piastri’s McLaren who had hit the wall moments before.

The injury ruled Ricciardo out for the remainder of the weekend, while Piastri would go to impress the field and qualify in eighth on Saturday.

The Victorian was then able to hold position in a frantic start to Sunday’s wet race, with the team opting to stay out on slick tyres when most of the field dived into the pits when the rain started to fall on the opening lap.

Unfortunately, the decision to stay out saw Piastri fall down the order, but he was soon able to slowly work his way back through the grid after finding some pace as the track continued to dry.

The rain would then start to fall once again late in the race, resulting in a safety car and red flag intervention after Zhou Guanyu found himself in the wall at turn one.

After a 40-minute delay, Piastri would go on to cross the line in ninth in a final sprint to the line.

Meanwhile, Jack Doohan’s FIA Formula 2 World Championship title hopes have been dealt a major blow after a DNF in the category’s one and only classified race of the weekend.

After Saturday’s sprint race was abandoned due to wet weather conditions, Doohan was unable to capitalise on Sunday when he found himself in the wall at the final corner of turn one, prematurely ending his weekend.

Luckily for Doohan, no drivers in the top four of the championship were able to add to their points tally at Zandvoort, meaning a maiden Formula 2 title is still in sights.

Once again joining the premier open wheel categories was Harri Jones and the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, who had two competitive races at the circuit for the first time this year.

Unfortunately for Jones, he walked away with his two lowest results of the year, with a 10th place finish in race one before then dropping to 12th in race two.

A podium finish in the Rookie Cup sees the Queenslander remain in contention of top honours with only one round remaining.

Each category will return to the track for next weekend for the Italian Grand Prix on 1-3 September.
