Back-to-back in Sydney for Mostert

It was a rinse and repeat victory for Mobil1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert at Sydney Motorsport Park, claiming a second race win at the Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight on Sunday.

Mostert was clinical in executing another two-stopper, hunting down Cam Waters on a one-stop strategy until Saturday’s winner eventually overtook the Monster Castrol Racing driver at lap 40 to secure the win.

Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Will Brown finished the 51 laps in third, the standings-leader also opting for a one-stop strategy to take the challenge to Waters throughout the afternoon.

The day started in historic fashion with Shell V-Power Racing’s Will Davison taking out his 29th career pole, nabbing first position from Mostert by a record-braking gap of 0.0007s at the venue.

Davison managed to hold position around the inside at race start, however Mostert wasted no time in stealing the position before the end of lap 1 for the first lead change of the afternoon.

Mostert wasted little time in the early stages of Sunday’s race with the clear air ahead of him, quickly building 3.8-second buffer to Davison ahead of the first pitstop window.

Further down the order Matt Payne executed what commentators dubbed “move of the year” – the Penrite Racing driver performing a stunning double overtake of Nick Percat and Ryan Wood that aided in his fourth-place finish.

“I just want to win and do burnouts,” was Mostert’s simple goal for the afternoon, the race winner elated with back-to-back victories at Sydney Motorsport Park.

“Feels good, I wish I’d done it a lot sooner to be honest. But just a credit to the whole Walkinshaw Andretti United crew.

“We obviously rolled out a pretty good car and kept chipping away at it. Qualifying we were there, thereabouts. But this weekend the race car was something pretty special around here.”

The early battle with Davison a particular highlight, Mostert credited the early overtake for the clean air required to build an invaluable gap.

“Had a good old race with Will ‘Davo’ at the start, we gave as much room as we could. He ran me nice and high at two, which I would have done exactly the same thing. He had a little bit of a moment at five and I just took the opportunity to try and clear him,” Mostert added.

“That car was really good in clean air, we were just able to get the head down. Obviously, we had to drive hard, hurt the tyre hard, but that’s why we stuck to our strategy and got the chocolates.”

With the points haul from the weekend’s consecutive wins, Mostert moves up to second in the standings only 104 points behind Brown.
