Consistent efforts across multiple continents from Aussie competitors

Consistent efforts across multiple continents from Aussie competitors

Formula 1 – Monaco

Oscar Piastri endured a challenging yet rewarding Monaco Grand Prix weekend, assisting McLaren in obtaining a strong result from a difficult start.

After pushing his limits for pace in the three practice sessions and qualifying just seventh, Piastri brought the car home to the chequered flag inside the top 10.

In a race featuring multiple retirements, penalties and a red flag, the Australian kept his front wing clean and steadily moved up the race order.

He crossed the line in fifth but was ultimately promoted to fourth following several post-race penalties, which reshuffled the order.

The result allowed Piastri to gain valuable championship points and overtake teammate Lando Norris in the standings heading into the upcoming Barcelona Grand Prix. He currently sits on 60 points.

Formula 3 – Monaco

Round 2 of the FIA Formula 3 Championship made its way to Monaco for the long-awaited return to racing.

It was a less-than-ideal weekend for James Wharton from the outset. A crash in Free Practice ended his session early, limiting valuable track time on Monaco’s difficult street circuit and shortening his preparation time for Qualifying.

With little opportunity to build lap repetition following a crash in Practice, the Prema Racing driver qualified P25.

Despite the setback, Wharton showed strong race pace across both races.

In Saturday’s Sprint Race, he produced a clean and consistent drive from the back of the grid, managing tyre degradation effectively to finish P22 while setting the fastest lap.

Post-race penalties for other drivers, combined with Wharton’s discipline, promoted him to P15.

Sunday’s Feature Race followed a similar pattern, with Wharton climbing to P18 and again recording the fastest lap.

Attention now turns to Barcelona (12–14 June), where Wharton will look to translate his pace into points.

IndyCar – Madison

Will Power experienced a productive weekend at the 2026 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

Power ended the final practice session eighth-fastest, signalling a challenge near the front of the pack. However, qualifying proved to be a hurdle.

During his two-lap run, Power could only muster 21st on the grid with a 169.670 mph average, leaving him with significant work to do on race day.

In the 260-lap race, Power mounted an impressive come-from-behind drive. Starting deep in the field, he worked his way forward through strategy and race pace, ultimately finishing eighth.

The result encapsulated a positive race story of 13 positions gained and delivered a valuable top-10 finish on a day when overtaking was difficult.

While teammate Josef Newgarden claimed victory, Power’s comeback from 21st to eighth highlighted positive race-day improvements amid a season of unlucky breaks for the experienced Australian.

Indy NXT – Madison

Australian interest in the INDY NXT by Firestone race at World Wide Technology Raceway centred around Lochie Hughes and Jack Beeton, with Hughes producing one of his strongest weekends of the 2026 season.

The Andretti Global driver showed speed from the outset and capped off qualifying by claiming pole position with a two-lap average of 162.578 mph.

It was Hughes’ first oval pole in INDY NXT, his third career pole overall, and a welcome boost to an up and down season.

Starting from the front row gave Hughes a genuine shot at victory on a track where he won in 2025, and remained one of the key contenders throughout the 75-lap race. Hughes would finish the race in sixth, one spot behind teammate Max Taylor.

While he was unable to turn pole position into a win by the end of the session, Hughes was able to maintain his reputation as one of the category’s strongest oval racers.

For rookie Beeton, the event was another valuable step in finding his feet in Indy NXT. The HMD Motorsports driver avoided any major drama, adding another solid result to his rookie campaign.

Beeton noted a lack of testing time to accumulate adequate setup preparation prior to qualifying, but that didn’t slow him down from securing a P8 in Qualifying. Following that, Beeton managed to hold his own, finishing just one spot out of the points in P11.

Absent from the event was Nicolas Stati, making way for the team’s substitute driver Yuven Sundaramoorthy. Stati will return to the #15 seat at Road America.

Porsche Supercup – Monaco

Sam Shahin and Caleb Sumich both enjoyed another competitive weekend on motorsport’s biggest stages, competing in the opening round of the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup on the streets of Monaco.

Racing in one of the world’s most competitive one-make categories, Shahin and Sumich completed practice, qualifying and the race against a stacked international field.

After qualifying in a highly competitive session in 25th and 15th respectively, Shahin and Sumich continued to build experience aboard the new-generation Porsche 911 Cup car.

While he wasn’t in contention for the outright honours in a race won by German youngster Theo Oeverhaus, Shahin was able to complete the race without incident in 23rd. Sumich fell just outside the top 10 following a solid drive on his end, ending the 17-lap session in 13th.

24 Hours of Fuji – Fuji

Supercars rookie Jayden Ojeda excelled in the NAPAC Fuji 24 Hour Race over the weekend, one of the Asian continent’s most popular endurance races.

PremiAir Racing Supercars driver Ojeda was called up for the race by Craft-Bamboo Racing alongside Jeffrey Lee, Sun Jingzu, Adderly Fong and Tom Kalender.

The Craft-Bamboo Mercedes came home third in Sunday’s race, which formed Round 3 of the 2026 ENEOS Super Taikyu Series season.

Ojeda, fresh off a Supercars career-best sixth in the Tyrepower Tasmania Super 440 finale, scored a podium in the 24-hour enduro.

Impressively, the Ojeda car clinched the podium despite carrying 60 kilograms of success ballast, with the car also suffering a puncture and driveshaft issue during the night.

Ojeda returns to Australia with another appearance in the GT World Challenge Australia season at Queensland Raceway this weekend, before the Supercars season resumes in Darwin on 19-21 June.

Ligier European Series – Portimão

Alex Gardner enjoyed an impressive weekend in Round 3 of the 2026 Ligier European Series at Le Mans.

Driving the #14 Team Virage Ligier JS P4, Gardner was immediately on the pace during practice and established himself as one of the leading contenders in the JS P4 class.

In qualifying, Gardner and teammate Simon Schranz delivered a result of 4:09.275, placing second among the JS P4 drivers and just 0.108 seconds behind the #7 LR Motorsport car.

The 60-minute Le Mans heat proved highly competitive, with Gardner and Schranz battling at the front throughout for Team Virage.

After an enthralling race, Gardner helped finish second in class, only 0.839 seconds behind class winners Ethan Pharamond and Mika Abrahams.

The result yielded a strong championship points haul for Gardner, and was further emphasised by securing the class’ fastest lap with a 4:09.551 time on lap 3.

International GT Open – Misano

Christian Mansell ran a competitive round at the International GT Open’s first visit to Misano over the weekend.

In practice, Mansell and co-driver Maximilian Götz showed solid pace in the Team Motopark Mercedes-AMG GT3, arriving as championship leaders following their recent Spa 500 victory.

Qualifying proved tight, with Mansell setting the fifth-fastest time in Qualifying 1 (1:31.955), less than eight-tenths from pole.

The pair were unable to challenge for the front row in the second qualifying session as rivals Elite Motorsport and Greystone GT set the benchmark.

Mansell and Götz managed to finish ninth in Race 1, before contact was made with another competitor in Race 2, causing a wheel issue and subsequently dropped them out of contention, resulting in a non-classification.

Despite the setback, they remain second in the team standings heading into the Hungaroring sprint round on 6 July.

Eurocup-3 – Portimão

Patrick Heuzenroeder and Gianmarco Pradel both put together encouraging performances at Round 2 of the 2026 Eurocup-3 season at Portimão.

Pradel showed strong one-lap pace throughout the weekend, qualifying high up the order. In Race 1, the MP Motorsport driver finished 11th after a difficult race in a highly competitive 30-car field. Pradel bounced back impressively in Race 2, climbing to fifth place and securing valuable championship points.

Heuzenroeder’s weekend was more challenging, but not without positive moments. The Griffin Core driver was consistently in the midfield during testing. He finished 22nd in Race 1 but produced a much stronger performance in the subsequent race, finishing seventh in Race 2.

Pradel left Portugal with a good allotment of points to sit seventh in the Drivers’ Standings, and Heuzenroeder continued his rookie Eurocup-3 campaign in good stead, jumping up to 15th in the standings after securing the eight points in the second race session.
