Women’s participation surges in Queensland’s far-north

The Far North Queensland Motorsports Club has observed an encouraging uptake in women’s motorsport participant, following a sold out Ladies Come & Try Rally Day event in May.

Held late last month at Tepon Raceway in the Queensland locality of Kalunga, the club’s all-women Come & Try event surpassed expectation with club officials stating the day involved an exciting atmosphere with members getting out of their comfort zones.

The event operated under the umbrella of Motorsport Australia’s Women’s Introduction to Motorsport program, which covers a range of topics and experiences, all designed for participants to experience motorsport for the first time in a fun, safe and affordable environment.

“What an incredible day,” FNQ Motorsports Club Secretary Donna Edwards said.

“With the support of the Motorsport Australia and the Women’s Introduction to Motorsport team, a simple idea combined with a fresh and unique marketing approach saw the FNQ Motorsports Ladies Come & Try Rally Day absolutely explode in popularity and exceed all expectations.

“What began as an opportunity to introduce more women to motorsport quickly became one of the club’s most successful participation events.

“The response from the community was overwhelming, with enthusiastic ladies of all ages stepping out of their comfort zones to experience the thrill of rally driving in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.”

FNQ Motorsports Club will go from strength to strength, hosting another Ladies Come & Try Day on Saturday, 12 September with significant interest already gathered.

Edwards went even further into the club’s plans, confirming the club will host similar women-only events in 2027 due to the popular demand.

“The atmosphere throughout the day was electric. Laughter, encouragement and excitement filled the venue as participants discovered that motorsport isn’t just for the boys,” Edwards added.

“From first-time drivers to those who had always wanted to give it a go, every participant embraced the challenge and left with a smile.

“For me personally, one of the highlights was seeing the incredible spirit of our club on full display. The volunteers, instructors, officials and members all came together to create a welcoming, supportive and fun environment for everyone involved.

“It was genuinely humbling to witness, and I couldn’t have been prouder of FNQ Motorsports and the people who make it such a special club.”
