The Repco Supercars Championship delivered a terrific weekend of racing in North Queensland as the NTI Townsville 500 produced three different race winners and a crucial points haul for Matt Payne heading into the second half of the season.
Friday’s opening 100-kilometre sprint belonged to Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters, who held off a relentless challenge from Brodie Kostecki to claim victory by just two-tenths of a second.

Waters’ second consecutive Friday race win followed his success in Darwin last month, while Kostecki was forced to settle for second after applying pressure throughout the closing laps.
Championship contender Matt Payne completed the podium in third, ahead of teammate Kai Allen and Chaz Mostert.

Payne turned the tables in Saturday’s feature race with a commanding performance, converting his championship momentum into a dominant victory.
The Grove Racing driver crossed the line more than 10 seconds clear of Team 18’s Anton De Pasquale after controlling proceedings across the 200-kilometre session.

Kostecki added another podium in third after starting from pole position, while Waters and Thomas Randle completed the top five.
Payne’s victory strengthened his grip on the championship after another difficult recovery drive from Broc Feeney, who climbed from 17th on the grid to finish eighth.
Sunday finally saw Kostecki convert pole position into victory, with the 2023 Supercars champion returning to the top step of the podium for the first time since Christchurch in April.

Driving Dick Johnson Racing’s No. 17 Ford Mustang, Kostecki claimed his sixth win of the season and the 17th of his Supercars career.
Championship leader Payne continued his remarkable consistency by finishing second, while Waters secured his second podium of the weekend in third.
Chaz Mostert was the leading Toyota driver in fourth, with Kai Allen rounding out the top five.
Across the weekend, Payne emerged as the biggest winner despite claiming just one race victory.

The New Zealander’s results of third, first and second allowed him to extend his championship advantage, while consistent performances from Waters and Kostecki kept both drivers firmly in the title conversation.
Heading to the next round, Payne leads the Repco Supercars Championship by 92 points over Feeney, with Waters and Kostecki continuing to close the gap after strong weekends respectively.
The championship battle will resume at the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440, to be held at Wanneroo’s MotorMall.com.au Raceway from 31 July to 2 August.
