The Motorsport Australia South Australian Motor Racing Championship get underway this weekend at Mallala Motorsport Park with a special meeting on the cards for the 118 entries entered in the season opener.
It’s been more than six months since the circuit last held a round of the championship, and it does so in style this time around with the Sporting Car Club of SA run event to take place under the popular twilight format – meaning the six competing categories will battle it out under lights.
The Hyundai Excels once again boast the round’s largest field with a whopping 41 cars entered as former champion and SA Driver of the Year, Asher Johnston headlines the field.
While Johnston is likely to be vying for the title again in 2021, there are plenty of challengers who will give him a run for his money, especially in the form of young guns Jayden Wanzek and Aaron Oliver.
There are a few other notable drivers featured in the category this weekend, including former Australian V8 Ute Series and Aussie Racing Cars driver Troy Dontas, as well as talented brothers, Adam and Jarrod Currie, who will be keen to make amends for a big wheel failure at The Bend late last year.
Another category to keep an eye on over the weekend will be the Improved Production Cars, where 18 cars will contest the three races. Entering the round as the main contender will be Scott Cook, while fellow S13 Silvia driver James Benford makes the step up from the Excels and will be looking for a strong debut.
Both categories will be live streamed via their social media channels, allowing for fans to keep track of the action on Saturday, while those lucky enough to attend can do so for free from 12pm ACDT onwards.
The Motorsport Australia South Australia Motor Racing Championship takes place at Mallala Motorsport Park on Saturday 13 March.
