Monash Motorsport has taken out top honours at Formula SAE-Australasia once again, with the powerhouse team winning both the Electric and Combustion categories in the 2019 edition.

 

More than 30 teams from universities around the world took part in the annual event at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria, but it was the homegrown talent from Melbourne’s south that proved too strong.

 

 

It was a different story this year though, as both of Monash Motorsport’s cars finished ahead of the University of Queensland after winning four out of the eight challenges as opposed to the Queensland University’s two.

 

Consistency was key for the remaining spots on the outright podium as the University of Canterbury and Griffith University finished in the top three for the electric and combustion categories, despite not winning any challenges throughout the weekend.

The universities had to complete five challenges on the Winton track with Monash claiming the Endurance, Autocross and Skid Pan sections, as well as a top three placings in the remaining two challenges.

 

Out of the three off track activities, Monash won the Engineering Design competition for both electric and combustion categories, cementing their well-deserved victory.

The University of Queensland were also highly deserving for their outright runner-up finishes as they secured victories in the Cost section and Efficiency for both Combustion and Electric categories.

The remaining challenges saw RMIT University win both categories in the Acceleration leg, while the West Australian based Edith Cowan University won the Combustion business presentation and New Zealand’s University of Auckland won the Electric category
for the same challenge.

 

During the weekend’s presentation, four teams were given special awards for excelling in specific areas of the competition, including the CAMS Inspiring Motorsport Award which was given to Honda Technical College Kansai from Japan for showing the
best spirit during the competition. 

Edith Cowan University was given for the LEAP Award for Best Use of Simulation, the University of South Australia received the Harry Watson award for their innovation and Indian outfit VIT Chennai was given the SAE-A Encouragement Award for making a distinct
contribution.
