Autocross is a timed motorsport event where participants compete individually (no co-drivers), and the only thing you’re trying to beat is the clock.
Autocross takes place on an unsealed or sealed surface and sometimes both, typically on a compact, twisty course design which is longer than 400m and shorter than 4km, with the course pathway marked out by cones.
The discipline is designed to test a driver’s car control and precision without the high speeds or other complexities associated with full rallying or circuit racing. The aim is simple, to complete the course in the shortest time possible (absolutely nothing like the game of golf).
Autocross is also one of the safest and cheapest ways to have some fun behind the wheel, perfect for everyone from absolute beginners to the more experienced driver. You compete at your pace, in your car and within your skill and comfort level.
Its popularity is due largely to its accessibility with many autocross events held at local spaces like paddocks, airstrips, car parks, or temporary tracks set up by car clubs, which also keeps entry fees affordable.
To make it easy to get involved, the class is open to a wide range of vehicles, from standard road cars to modified race/rally cars.

Autocross serves as a great entry point for those looking to get into motorsport, providing a safe, controlled environment to hone driving skills. It’s also an ideal option for car enthusiasts who want to enjoy competition without the need for specialised cars, mechanical knowledge or expensive setups.
With safety always a top priority, drivers must be at least 14 years of age and hold a current Motorsport Australia Speed Licence or higher grade, or a Licence acceptable to Motorsport Australia.
Alternatively, and helpful for first-timers, an individual may choose to apply for Motorsport Australia’s new Single Event Speed Licence to get involved in the sport through a quick and simple process.
Participants can complete a Single Event Speed Licence application before or on the day of an event through the Motorsport Australia Member Portal. Upon submission of an application, the Member Services team will activate the licence for seven days.
Other ways to get involved include attending a Motorsport Australia-affiliated car club’s Come and Try event, where drivers can dip their toes in autocross within a relaxed, beginner-friendly environment utilising an Introductory Licence.
Neither the Single Event Speed Licence nor the Introductory Licences require a club membership – that part can come later should you choose to continue to participate.

Should you be ready to sign up to be a member of a club you find your nearest club by using Motorsport Australia’s new Club Finder tool.
Safety is Motorsport Australia’s number one priority and event-specific safety requirements (such as a Motorsport Australia-approved helmet or wearing goggles/helmet visor in an open-style automobile) will be available through the organising club upon registration.
