A key area of cover that clubs often underestimate is Association Liability, also known as Directors and Officers Insurance.
This type of protection steps in for the personal liability that committee members may face in relation to decisions they make while managing the club.
These policies will often include benefits such as cover for the theft of club funds through fraud, as well as legal costs associated with responding to a WorkSafe investigation.
Examples of claims these policies may respond to include allegations relating to the termination of a person’s membership, or the refusal to provide membership based on race, religion or gender.
A claim could also arise from a contentious decision that breaches the club’s constitution, or where a club treasurer has stolen club funds through deception.
In addition to the above, clubs should strongly consider insurance cover for their contents, equipment, buildings and venues.
For clubs that rely heavily on revenue generated from a single event, event cancellation insurance should also be considered.
This can provide cover for lost revenue where an event is cancelled due to circumstances such as fire, flood or another unexpected event.
