Steve Tamasi has been crowned National Sports Sedan Series winner after capping off a sensational year with a final round clean sweep at Island Magic in Phillip Island.  

Heading into the final round, Tamasi only needed a top 10 finish in the first race to secure the title after fellow contender Tom Randle confirmed his absence from the season finale. 

Tamasi began the weekend strong, qualifying in pole before dominating the field to win the first race and his maiden title.

Despite having the ability to relax for the rest of the weekend, Tamasi took a different approach, asserting his dominance to win the remaining races and a second consecutive round, his first coming at the Shannons Nationals at Queensland Raceway, 

Following his much-anticipated victory, Tamasi was just relieved to finally seal the deal after leading for a majority of the year.

“To win felt like a massive weight lifted off the shoulders,” Tamasi said.

“We went into the final round with the championship not locked in, but once we won that first race, it got a lot easier and we got to soak it in. 

“I’m really happy with the car and the reliability of it and although we were pushed in the last two sessions, we got the wins and had a really good weekend.”

As Tamasi managed to win every round of the weekend, Phil Crompton in the Ford Mustang and Monaro pilot Michael Robinson finished all three races behind him in second and third respectively.

Thanks to their solid weekend, both drivers managed to leapfrog ten-time national champion Tony Ricciardello to end the year in fifth and sixth.

On the other hand, it was a weekend of missed opportunity for Shane Woodman and Steven Lacey with both drivers having the chance to end the season higher in the standings. 

With Lacey the only other contender ahead of the final round, his title charge got off to the worse possible start, retiring in the first race before placing 10th and fifth to finish the weekend in ninth outright.

Lacey’s result saw him drop down to fourth in the overall standings below Woodman, who managed to secure an overall finish in third. 

Despite a strong round that included place, the BMW M3 GTR driver was left to wonder what could have been, with only five points separating him and outright runner-up Randle.

With the series now wrapped up for the year, Tamasi has every intention to return in 2019 and defend his first title. 

“We will definitely be back again next year to defend the title in the Calibra,” Tamasi added. 

“We will also prepare a 350z on the side so that in 2020, we should have two cars in the grid we did in the past which my dad will drive for that season.”

The National Sports Sedan Series is yet to announce their 2019 schedule with a calendar expected to be released in the coming weeks.
