Mercedes domination continues
Monday 13 May, 2019
Lewis Hamilton has won the Spanish Grand Prix.
Another weekend, another Mercedes one-two, as the all-conquering silver arrows took control at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Starting in second, Lewis Hamilton charged past him teammate Valtteri Bottas in the opening seconds and the Briton never looked back.
CAMS Ambassador Daniel Ricciardo finished outside the points, ending the race in 12th after starting the day from 13th.
“It was a frustrating race from my side this afternoon,” Ricciardo said.
“We were certainly quicker than 12th today and, in the end, it wasn’t a perfect Sunday. The midfield is so close and everything has to be executed to the maximum for a strong result. We’ll regroup and look forward to the next one.”
On the flip side, Hamilton’s win sees him seven points clear of his teammates in the drivers’ standings.
“It's been an incredible day for the team. We've brought an upgrade here and everyone worked so hard to make that possible,” Hamilton said post-race.
“I'm very proud of everyone back at the factory and thankful for all their hard work. The guys here at the track are all performing at an extremely high level as well, thank you all.”
After the fifth one-two finish from the first five races of 2019, Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes Benz Motorsport, was obviously delighted with the perfect start to the year.
"We are trying to push the benchmark every single year and seeing this all come together after the struggles we had in winter testing is fantastic for the team,” Wolff said.
“We saw a strong Lewis today and he was quick from the very beginning. Valtteri lost the lead at the start; he reported something strange with his clutch at the start and we need to investigate this. After the first corner it was a relatively straightforward race.”
The Formula 1 crews now head to one of the most iconic events in world sport, with the Monaco Grand Prix to take place in a fortnight, with the event beginning on 23 May and the race on 26 May.
