Piastri earns good points in Germany

Monday 07 October, 2019
Oscar Piastri is in the box seat to take out the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup after collecting another good haul of points during the series’ penultimate round in Germany.

The Victorian went into the round holding a 13-point lead over fellow title contender Victor Martins with the Frenchman having claimed a clean sweep at the previous round in Barcelona.

In wet and difficult conditions, Piastri got off to a decent start to the first race after qualifying on the front row and found himself in an entertaining battle with Martins during the early stages of the race.

Despite being run wide from Martins at multiple times and losing ground on the race leader, Piastri kept his cool and managed to make a few passes later in the race, crossing the line in second place behind Martins.

In similar weather conditions to the previous day, the youngster was unable to replicate his qualifying one efforts, posting the fifth-fastest time and leaving himself a mountain to climb to retain his lead in the series.

However as the heavens opened up and fell on the famous Hockenheimring, Martins too fell down the order while a determined Piastri capitalised on his rival’s poor performance, finishing in second place and extending the outright gap back to 13 points with one round remaining.

The final round of the Formula Renault Eurocup will be at the Yas Marina Circuit on 25-26 October.
