Supercars combine development series for 2020
Wednesday 24 June, 2020
The Dunlop Super2 Series and Super3 will combine for the rest of the 2020 season.
Supercars has announced the remaining four rounds of a joint calendar between the Dunlop Super2 Series and Australian V8 Touring Car Series, which will return to its Super3 moniker.
Competitors in both of Supercars’ second and third tiers will race in the same field but in different classes, allowing both series to continue in this interrupted season and within state and federal regulations.
Starting off next month at the Truck Assist Winton, the joint Super2 and Super3 series, will then contest the rest of the combined seasons at the Penrite Sandown, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and Supercars’ season finale at Sydney Motorsport Park in December.
With nine of the current crop of Super2 Drivers having recently graduated from the Super3 programs, as well as six Supercars drivers coming from Super2, Supercars Chief Operating Officer Shane Howard believed the combination of both series will have a positive effect.
“It’s pleasing we have reached an agreement with both Series’ officials to allow more of Australia’s best young drivers to compete together as part of our revised calendar,” Howard said.
“By combining these two categories into singular races, it will provide exposure for team sponsors and bolster the number of competitors on track.
“The primary focus for us is around the driver pathway, a commitment which Dunlop shares.
“This combined category gives Super3 Series drivers the opportunity to rub shoulders with competitors running in Dunlop Super2 and helps them to become more familiar with how to race Supercars.”
More details on the combined Super2 and Super3 category will be released in the coming weeks ahead of the Truck Assist Winton on 18-19 July.
