Sandown Raceway has been added back into the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship after the Australian Grand Prix was postponed until November.

With Supercars scheduled to host its second round as the main support category to the FIA Formula 1 Championship’s season opener in March, the event’s postponement meant Supercars will now head to Sandown for the vacant spot on 19-21 March.

It comes as no surprise for Australia’s premier racing category after Supercars had already anticipated Sandown as the potential replacement should the Grand Prix date change when releasing its draft 2021 schedule late last year.

The Australian Grand Prix will now take place on 18-21 November and it is yet to be decided on whether Supercars will add an additional round to its 12-event calendar in order to join the Formula 1 card at Albert Park.

With Sandown now returning to the Supercars schedule, it means the venue will host an Australian Touring Car/Supercars Championship event for the 51st time – the most of any Victorian circuit.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer was thrilled to welcome Sandown back to the calendar.

"We are delighted to confirm we will return to Sandown in 2021,” Seamer said.

"Few circuits demonstrate our history better than Sandown. We'd like to extend our thanks to the Melbourne Racing Club for their support and flexibility.

"With regards to the Grand Prix, we will assess the opportunity closer to the time.

"Right now our focus is on the pre-season and first few rounds of the upcoming 2021 Supercars season."

Details for the round, along with ticket availability, will be released in the coming weeks.

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will begin with the Mount Panorama 500 in Bathurst on 26-28 February.
