The South Western Touring Club welcomed a whopping 51 competitors for the fourth round of its Bunbury Autocross season on the weekend as Andrew Jansen produced a clinical performance to take out the win.
Behind the wheel of Hyundai Excel, Jansen went fastest on all four of his runs as he claimed a four-second victory over Ford Focus driver Mathew Gerdei.
The event started out close as the duo were neck and neck throughout the opening two runs with Jansen getting the edge over Gerdei by just half a second both times.
However, the big difference came in the third run when Jansen shaved an impressive three seconds off his previous best time, while Gerdei could only better his own best time by one second.
A late fightback from Gerdei saw him post his fastest time of the day with a 1:23.20, but it was too little too late as Jansen produced the event’s fastest time with 1:22.52.
“It’s great to have gotten my second win for the season as it puts me near the top of the standings,” Jansen said.
“The track was really rough on the final run and I didn’t drive as hard as I could as there were a lot of potholes – I didn’t want to wreck the car.
“It was much easier at the start of the day, but of course the more times the cars went through, the more difficult the track got and it was actually quite scary on the final run.
“I was pretty happy to have had my fastest time on the final run though, however with that said, I don’t enter these events to win. I just enjoy driving.
“It’s a really good club to be a part of and they are always happy. It’s a great atmosphere and it’s serious but not serious enough that you can’t help people, which is what happens a lot at these events and it's why I like racing there.”
While the top two drivers were in a league of their own, the battle for third had plenty of drama as Ron Ferguson pipped Mitsubishi Lancer driver Adam Wright on the final run.
Wright had been the better driver all day, going faster on the first three runs, before Ferguson steered his Toyota Corolla to a two a half second win and stole third place by less than two tenths of a second.
Rounding out the top five was Brendan Long, who like Ferguson, waited until his final run of the day to replace his rival in Mark Hilder for fifth place.
Other notable results saw the 10th placed Noah Humble as the fastest junior, while Kelsey Gerdei was the fastest female of the day after guiding her Nissan Pulsar to a 13th outright.
