Doohan shows speed in F2 testing

Monday 20 December, 2021
Jack Doohan and Calan Williams took part in Formula 2 testing over the weekend.
Jack Doohan’s strong start to Formula 2 has continued with the Queenslander putting in an impressive performance during the championship’s three testing days in Abu Dhabi.

With the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship runner-up having recently secured a deal with British outfit Virtuosi Racing for the 2022 season, Doohan enjoyed his first official stint with his new team.

A perfect start saw Doohan end both of day one’s sessions in third place behind Felipe Drugovich and Jehan Daruvala – his 1:35.851 in session two the third fastest time of the day.

Unfortunately, he was unable to improve on his time during the second day of testing, however he posted the second fastest run in the morning session, behind only Drugovich. In the afternoon, he posted the fifth fastest time of the session with this year’s F3 champion Dennis Hauger finishing ahead of him.

On day three, Doohan was again unable to beat his time from the opening day of testing, however he topped the timesheets in the morning session with 1:36.110 – the next fastest driver being Daruvala who was just three hundredths off.

The 18-year-old then had a slow end to the campaign with the 15th fastest time, despite running the second most laps of the session with 55 in total.

Also running 55 laps in the afternoon session was fellow Australian Calan Williams.

Williams, who secured a spot with Trident Motorsport for the three day event, was unable to break the top three on any occasion, but was still the best in his team for five of the six sessions.

The West Australian’s best outcome came on day one where he posted the sixth fastest time of the session – which proved to be the 10th fastest time of the whole day across both sessions.

The following day, Williams made it three from three over Trident teammate Teppei Natori in the morning session, but dropped down the order in the afternoon to finish in P18 and behind Natori.

William’s final day saw him just miss out on the top 10 in both sessions with the 21-year-old finishing the day 11th and 12th respectively.

The FIA Formula 2 Championship will have two testing sessions early next year before the 2022 season begins on 19 March in Bahrain.
