The FIA Formula 2 Championship will now have two Australians competing this year, with Calan Williams securing a full-time seat with Trident Motorsport.

After fellow Australian and FIA Formula 3 Championship graduate Jack Doohan signed with Virtuosi Racing late last year, Williams became just the ninth driver to lock in a full-time seat for this year’s Championship and the first for the Italian-based team.

The announcement comes after Williams enjoyed a highly impressive performance during last year’s post-season F2 testing in Abu Dhabi, where he clocked in the 10th best time overall on the opening day.

As one of just five drivers out of the 22 to be experiencing the Formula 2 car for the first time, the West Australian showed no signs of pressure and cut hundreds of laps around the Yas Marina circuit throughout the three days – including a huge 105 lap stint on day three, where he posted the 11th fastest time of the day.

Ahead of his debut season, Williams was extremely excited to get the deal with Trident done.

“I am extremely happy to have secured the drive with Trident Motorsport,” Williams said.

“They are an incredibly professional team and we have been working very well together over the past couple of months as well as during the Abu Dhabi post-season tests.

“It’s such a unique chance that I have to step up into Formula 2. I’ll be working harder than ever to ensure that I perform at the best of my ability.

“I am very appreciative of Trident Motorsport for the opportunity and belief in me.”

Trident team Manager Giacomo Ricci was thrilled to have Williams join the team for the 2022 season and was looking forward to a big year from the 21-year-old.

“The 2021 Abu Dhabi F2 Post Season Test session was very positive for Calan,” Ricci said.

“He was able to adapt very quickly to the FIA F2 car and this allowed him to be competitive both in terms of performance and during the race simulation.

“We were very impressed with his performance. He has a very high work ethic, and it is great to work with a Driver who dedicates his life every day to go faster. There is already a very strong working bond between Calan and the team.”

“We are proud to have secured Calan with Trident Motorsport allowing us to face the FIA F2 2022 Championship together.”

This year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship season will be the largest in history, with 14 rounds scheduled for the season – all of which take place at Formula 1 events.
