S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship 

Cooper Webster has powered to a stunning victory in Round 2 of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship, having overcome an entertaining head-to-head battle with two-time champion Joey Mawson.

Webster claimed both of Sunday’s two races – one by fortune and one by sheer, raw pace – to take the Phillip Island weekend ahead of Mawson and James Golding in his most convincing S5000 performance yet.

Webster started second in race two however beat Mawson into turn one in race two, before the New South Welshman reclaimed the lead and crossed the line first.

In what would have been a record fifth-straight victory, Mawson was eventually struck with a five-second penalty for overlapping on the restart, which handed Webster the win and Golding the runner-up finish.

That result set up a race three showdown between Webster and Mawson as they lined up on the front row together for the third time this weekend, but Webster held firm and kept his lead.

Although it was close at the start, Webster was never truly challenged for the lead again, as he reached the chequered flag ahead of Mawson and Golding.

The 2023 S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship season will continue next month during Race Winton at Winton Motor Raceway on 9-11 June.

Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars and Monochrome GT4 Australia Series

Shane Smollen picked up where he left off yesterday in the combined Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars and Monochrome GT4 Australia Series – dominating the field to win both of Sunday’s races and win the GT4 round overall.

Behind the wheel of the Porsche Cayman 718, Smollen claimed a tough one-second win over Tony Quinn in the day’s first race before completing his clean sweep in the afternoon with a two-second win over Steve Jukes.

With Quinn crossing the line in third place in the final race and Jukes third in race three, it marked a solid day out for the trio.

In the Australian Production Cars, it was the Sherrin Rentals show as Iain Sherrin beat Grant Sherrin by three tenths in the morning’s race before the roles were reversed in the final race – Grant crossing the chequered flag first by six tenths.

Both of today’s races had two different A2 class winners making up the top three with Lindsay Kearns taking out third in race three and George Miedecke in race four.

The Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars & Monochrome GT4 Australia Series will form part of a bumper Race Winton show meeting at Winton Motor Raceway on 9-11 June.

Kumho V8 Touring Car Series

Jude Bargwanna capped off a remarkably Kumho V8 Touring Car Series debut with the overall round victory after picking up a race win and a podium during Sunday’s action.

The 18-year-old continued yesterday’s form to claim an eight-second win in the category’s second race for the weekend on Sunday morning, before he had a forgettable start to the final race, stalling on the start line.

Bargwanna would eventually finish the final outing in third place to secure the round win in the process.

Taking out second for the round was the teenager’s rival for much of the weekend in Jim Pollicina, who finished second in both of today’s races, while Ray Hislop rounded out the podium.

Having dominated Friday’s practice sessions, Notlaw Racing’s Jamie Tilley finished the season opener on a high, winning the third and final race of the round.

The Kumho V8 Touring Car Series will be back on track during Race Winton at Winton Motor Raceway on 9-11 June.

Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS

There was plenty of drama in today’s Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS race that saw Geoff Emery and Max Offer take out the race win and the overall round victory.

While the Audi R8 LMS Evo 2 of Emery and Offer was untroubled for the second race of the round, the drama behind them caused quite the show for fans and spectators.

Taking out second place and making it an Audi one-two was Liam Talbot and Fraser Ross with the Audi R8 LMS Evo 2 drivers edging out the Porsche 911 GT3R of Yasser Shah and Garnett Patterson.

However, the two crews’ battle provided plenty of drama throughout the one-hour session, which came to a head when contact between them resulted in a five-second penalty for Shahin.

Finishing the race in fourth respectively were Ross Poulakis and Jayden Ojeda in the Harrolds Volante Rosso Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT3, while Grove Motorsport’s Stephen and Brenton Grove rounded out the top five in their Porsche 911 GT3R.

Both the Mercedes AMG and Grove Motorsport Porsche would end up on the overall round podium behind Jamec Racing Audi of Emery and Offer after consistent weekends.

Taking out the race’s GTA class was Brad Schumacher, while Renee Gracie won the GT3 class.

The Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia returns in July for its fourth round at Sydney Motorsport Park on 28-30 July.

Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series had two memorable races on Sunday with the first welcoming a new driver to the winners’ club, while the second saw the continued strong form of another.

In an highly entertaining outing early on Saturday afternoon, race two for the weekend saw Michael Clemente notch up a maiden series victory after a thrilling battle with Jordan Cox.

After the two went toe-to-toe, Clemente pulled off a last lap pass on Cox’s Peugeot to win the reverse top ten encounter, marking an emotional win in the new Cupra Leon debut weekend.

Rounding out the race podium was Ben Bargwanna, who steered his Burson Auto Parts Racing Peugeot to third place in the final race of the weekend.

Finishing ahead of Bargwanna in race three was race one winner Josh Buchan and Clemente, with the front three having enjoyed a trouble three run in the final race.

The Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series’ third round of the season will be at Winton Motor Raceway as part of Race Winton on 9-11 June.

National Trans Am Series

Nash Morris celebrated his birthday in style today after taking out a pair of victories on the final day of action in the National Trans Am Series.

Morris first claimed the opening race in thrilling fashion, with the birthday boy holding off the likes of Owen Kelly and Ben Grice as he charged to his first win of 2023.

Morris then converted pole position into a race win after holding off the rapid James Moffat in one of the closest finishes in recent history.

In the first race, Norrish took the lead off Kelly on the opening lap, before defending his position after immense pressure from Kelly, Thornburrow and Grice.

Meanwhile, James Moffat stormed through the grid from last place to challenge Grice and the leading pack, making a move into third place just as the safety car was deployed to claim third.

Moffat was in the thick of the action in race two as he took advantage of a mistake from Grice during the Victorian’s battle with Morris for the lead, which ultimately set up another entertaining battle for the lead – only this time it was between Moffat and Morris.

Moffat attempted a move around the outside of the final corner but was unable to execute as the pair went side by side all the way to the line – The gap of 0.047 being the closest in National trans Am history.

The win assured Morris claimed the Phillip Island round victory, finishing ahead of Moffat and Hayman who was promoted to third after a late DNF from Grice.

The National Trans Am Series’ next round forms part of the Race Winton and Winton Motor Raceway on 9-11 June.
