Piastri etches name into Australian motorsport history

Oscar Piastri has won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri is the latest Australian to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix race, adding his name to the history books after a standout race victory in Hungary.

Piastri won the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2024 overnight, with an impressive victory in his McLaren – making him just the fifth Australian to win a Grand Prix.

While Piastri had previously secured a Sprint race win, Sunday’s Grand Prix win is one the Melbourne born superstar will cherish for years to come as the first official Formula 1 victory in a race proper.

Motorsport Australia CEO Sunil Vohra congratulated Piastri for standing on the top step of the podium at the Hungaroring in Budapest, flying the Australian flag proudly.

“On behalf of everyone at Motorsport Australia, we’re thrilled for Oscar and his family, his management team led by Mark Webber and of course the team at McLaren on this historic victory,” Vohra said.

“Oscar has done Australia proud today and we know this win will be the first of many in what will be a long and successful Formula 1 career.

“The success of Oscar on this stage is a huge boost for Australian motorsport. We know there are many more Aussie drivers competing both here in Australia and in Europe ready to follow in his footsteps and Motorsport Australia stands ready to support the next generation.”

Piastri beat his teammate Lando Norris off the line after qualifying second to take the lead into turn one and from there, didn’t look back.

The win highlights the strength of Australian motorsport and its talent pool, including the impressive karting scene that continues to breed strong talent year-in, year-out.
