Off road competitors will have a new opportunity to compete in 2027 with the introduction of the Performance 4WD class, which will serve as a midway category between the existing Production 4WD and Extreme 4WD classes.

The new class, to be known as Performance 4WD (Class 81), will cater to vehicles that do not fit within the Production 4WD, 4WD Trophy Truck or Buggy categories.

Performance 4WD (Class 81) will allow broader modifications while retaining key production characteristics, providing greater flexibility for competitors without moving into the highly modified Extreme 4WD class.

Motorsport Australia Off Road General Manager Campbell Smith said the Performance 4WD class is about creating another pathway for competitors and giving more traditional 4WDs a place to compete.

“We hope it will encourage more grassroots participation and provide competitors with a clear opportunity to develop their vehicles and progress through the sport,” Smith outlined.

The Performance 4WD class is expected to create more competitive opportunities for traditional 4WD off road vehicles, including Nissan Patrols and Toyota LandCruisers, while encouraging greater grassroots participation and providing a clear entry point for competitors looking to progress in off road racing.

To be eligible, vehicles must be four-wheel drive automobiles as defined by Motorsport Australia General Requirements Article 1 and provide seating for at least two occupants.

Vehicles must be derived from a recognised series-production commercially manufactured utility-type truck, pick-up or station wagon with a rated load capacity of up to 1.5 tonnes.

All vehicles competing in Performance 4WD (Class 81) will also need to comply with the relevant Motorsport Australia Off Road General and Specific Requirements found in the Off Road Appendix of the Motorsport Australia Manual.

Competitors seeking further information or clarification about the new class can contact offroad@motorsport.org.au.
