Leyburn all set to roar

The Historic Leyburn Sprints takes place this weekend in Queensland.

After more than two years of waiting, the Historic Leyburn Sprints will finally get the chance to run this weekend with the 25th edition of the popular event ready to take over Leyburn.

With the one-kilometre street course set throughout the rural Queensland town’s public streets, up to 300 vehicles from all eras are expected to be on display across the weekend – both on track and on display.

Taking centre stage will be the sprints with historic, classic and late-model performance cars battling it out across the two days, as drivers aim to set the fastest time of the weekend.

Outside of the racing itself, there will be plenty of activations for the thousands of expected visitors to enjoy, with vintage caravans and Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine displays, country-style markets, charity auctions, a fun run, hot lap raffles and helicopter joy flights all part of the jam-packed schedule.

There will also be a number of special appearances by some big Australian motorsport names with the Leyburn Legends, made up of Dick Johnson, John Bowe, Colin Bond and Fred Gibson. All will participate in a variety of meet-and-greet opportunities with fans.

Repco Supercars Championship gun Brodie Kostecki will also be in attendance, with the Erebus Motorsport driver to run some demonstration laps in the same Ford Fusion NASCAR Marcos Ambrose steered to an historic victory at Watkins Glen International Raceway in 2008.

With more than 16,000 visitors expected to attend the event over the course of the weekend, Sprints organising committee President Tricia Chant believed the town’s hard work in putting the event together would pay off.

“We’ve worked so hard to make sure it gets to the starting line this weekend. Covid protection measures will be placed, but apart from losing a handful of interstate competitors the pandemic has had virtually no impact on the show we plan to put on,” Chant said.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming many supporters from all over south-east Queensland and beyond who regard the Sprints as an annual highlight.

“It also means so much to the Southern Downs region and especially the local community. Since the Historic Leyburn Sprints was launched in 1996, it’s estimated to have contributed around $1 million to local organisations and projects through direct involvement and donations.

“We also believe the wider economic impact of the Sprints is around $1.5 million per event. That means so much in these challenging times.”

Starting at 8am AEST on Saturday morning, there will be up to nine hours of track action with the special charity auction at the Royal Hotel to take place at 7pm in the evening.

On Sunday, competition resumes at 8am and concludes at 3pm local time with the charity fun run, Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine, NASCAR demonstration laps and the podium presentation to run throughout the day.

On both days, fans will have multiple opportunities to meet the Leyburn Legends, while the Vintage Vans display, Model T Fords parade laps, Wikner Ford Special demo run and hot laps with raffle winners will also take place across both days.
