Alex Peroni’s end to the year has continued to be full of good news with the Tasmanian driver confirmed to contest the Indy Lights next year.
After two seasons in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, Peroni will join British team Carlin Racing for the Northern American based series on a one-year deal, with both parties to make their category debut in 2021.
The move marks the end of an era for Peroni, who has been based in Europe for the past five years, having raced in some of Europe’s significant development series, including the F3 Championship and the Formula Renault Eurocup.
A proven driver on many levels, Peroni will enter the NTT IndyCar Series feeder category with lots of confidence after one of his best seasons behind the wheel, which saw him grab multiple F3 podiums and the young gun was also awarded the prestigious Peter Brock Medal earlier this month.
While Peroni has had very little experience on North American circuits and against his new competition, the 21-year-old is looking forward to the new challenge.
“This year has been a lot different to other years and now we cap it off with a completely new change and I am really keen to get next year started,” Peroni said.
“I now have to adapt to a new team, championship, country and culture. It’s definitely going to be a challenge, there is no doubt about that, but I think it’s a great one.
“Carlin is a fantastic team. We had been in serious discussions about a potential move to Formula 2, but in the end, they were really keen to start a team with me in Indy Lights as they are really invested in the US. It all happened pretty quickly.
“The goal will be towards the front. The schedules are pretty similar to F3, so there isn’t a lot of track time, but I am hopeful of some podiums and maybe even race wins. Time will tell.
“I am thrilled to have signed up before the year is out. We usually don’t get a deal done by February or March, so to have something already lined up is a relief. It means I can now just focus on what I need to do to get ready for the series.”
One of the first drivers to be named in the 2021 Indy Light series, Peroni will be one of two drivers competing for the British team with his teammate yet to be announced.
While the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19, the 2021 calendar will feature 10 rounds across 10 states and begins on the Streets of St. Petersburg in early March.
