Thursday 15 April, 2021
Competitors taking part in the VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship's final round will be competing for the Warwick Brown Cup.
The VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship has confirmed 1977 Australian Grand Prix winner Warwick Brown will be honoured at the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships in Sydney Motorsport Park next month.

The Championship has used each meeting of the 2021 season to name the round trophy after an open wheel legend with John McCormack honoured in round one, Alfie Costanzo round two and John Bowe in round three.

Brown, whose career largely took place in the 1970s, won the 1975 New Zealand Grand Prix, the Rothmans International Series in 1977 and 1978 and claimed his highest honour in 1977 when he won the Australian Grand Prix at Oran Park Raceway.

A huge fan of the S5000 since it first begun, the former Formula 5000 star was thrilled to be on hand in presenting the Warwick Brown Cup to the winner of the 2021 VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship’s final round of 2021.

“I’m privileged to firstly still be around, and secondly able to be there to see S5000 again in the flesh and to present the trophy,” Brown said.

“S5000 is the absolute modern equivalent of what we were doing back in the 70s and will increasingly attract and develop the cream of Australia’s young motor racing stars.

“The cars are a little safer than our day, fortunately, but present the same sight and sound and open-wheeler challenge.. love it.”

Joey Mawson currently leads the standings with less than 45 points separating he, 2020 Dunlop Super2 Series winner Tom Randle and Tim Macrow, while a further three drivers are also in the running for the title with 130 points on offer across qualifying and the three races.

Tickets are now on sale for the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships’ round at Sydney Motorsport Park, which hosts the as final round of the 2021 VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship season.

The winner of the Championship will also receive the iconic Motorsport Australia Gold Star as part of the Australian Drivers’ Championship, becoming the 59th driver in history to be awarded the prize and the first since Simon Hodge in 2014.
