It was a positive three-day test in Abu Dhabi for Oscar Piastri.
Oscar Piastri has enjoyed a positive three-day test in Abu Dhabi in what was his first time behind the wheel of the current GP3 car.
Testing for both Trident and Jenzer race teams against a host of experienced GP3 and Formula 3 drivers, Piastri had a slow start to his campaign, placing 10th, 11th and 13th during the opening three sessions.
After more time behind the wheel, his talent was able to shine through with the Victorian showing dramatic improvement in the fourth session, jumping up nine spots to post the fourth fastest time in the field.
Piastri continued his solid form going into the third and final day, posting the sixth and fourth fastest times throughout the final two sessions.
Following the promising test sessions, Piastri thanked his crew for all the support via Facebook as he begins to work out his plans for 2019.
“Great three days at Abu Dhabi for the GP3 official test and my first time in the current GP3 car.” Piastri said post-event.
“The weather was perfect, the grip was high due to the Formula 1 and Formula 2 testing as well. I spent day one with Trident and then two days with Jenzer Motorsport.
“Learned a lot and put in some good lap times as things progressed. Thanks to all the teams, engineers and mechanics that helped me.
“Huge thanks to my sponsors HP Tuners, RaceRender LLC, VCM Performance, Flash Diesel.”
The test follows a solid debut season in Formula Renault Eurocup, where the 17-year-old picked up three podiums and finished eighth outright above fellow Australian Alex Peroni.
Piastri is yet to confirm his plans for 2019 with the Abu Dhabi test being used as an opportunity for drivers to get a feel for the new third tier of international open-wheel racing, the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
